I suppose as it gets colder, we can expect more birds to our tables, though they eat me out of house and home as it is But I was thrilled this morning to see not only our resident group of pheasants, the King and his concubines, but three adorable moorhens who must have walked up from the pond. Then I happened to glance out of my attic window to see a pretty tree-creeper, with its pure white breast, pecking at the lichen encrusted old cherry tree. I know they are no more special that the tits and finches, but they gave me a little extra buzz. ;D

It is marvellous isn't it to see them all again. I only feed in the winter time as I do think that they ought to fight for themselves now and again. Is there any possibility to see some photos please WT?

I've had the usual mix of Sparrows, Thrushes, Black Birds, Finches, Tits, Wrens, Doves, Starlings etc etc Ooooh not forgetting the Robins and a pair of Hedges Sparrows. They have had odd bits of food every now and again when it's been wet or cold. Today I started putting bird seed out and they looked at it as if to say where are the usual bits of bread or mashed spud

Because I feed the birds a great deal, I follow the advice of the RSPB that I don't stop over the summer months. Where feeding is intermittent, this is not so important. Summer or winter, I have countless birds lined up waiting for me every morning, I'd be scared to stop, in case they have forgotten how to look for their own food. I wouldn't advise getting into this position, it is very expensive Because I don't earn at the moment, I am given bags of seed as Christmas and birthday presents. ;D At the front of the house, I feed the wee birds with seed. At the back, it's scraps for the thugs, magpies, crows etc., The pheasants and wood pigeons visit both places. I'm amazed at how well they follow the unwritten rules of who eats what where. ;D Here is my photo of the treecreeper, taken through the bathroom window, so not very clear. Shrub........if you ever see a little bird fly to the bottom of a tree, then creep up the trunk, that's a treecreeper

I feed the birds all year round to because i like to atract them to my garden. Today there has been Robins Blue Tits Sparrows Blackbirds Starlings and the pesky greedy pigeons. Yes WT it is exspensive i agree but well worth it as well as the mixed bird seed i buy the cheapest sultanas and raisons from asda they love that mixed with the seeds. I hang fat balls now not in the warmer months and thread peanuts on a string. I also put apples and pears that are over ripe on the tables they love to peck at those to. I always try to find differant things to feed them they are a spoilt lot in my my garden

WT, I certainly wouldn't class a Tree-creeper as 'ordinary'. Maybe they are more common in Scotland, but I've always regarded it as a bit of a rarity. I expect your moorhens that are coming for food are the ones you fed when they were babies. I daren't put food out for birds. Not fair to lure them to their deaths

I tend to be a more serious winter feeder too... except I make a religion of sharing my daily toast with them in a small way: breadmaker makes a loaf/slice too large for the toaster, so the trimmings go out while I'm breakfasting... currently chaffinches and bluetits dining with me.
Have just started feeding the pheasants, and have been amazed by how readily they will respond to a cheery "come on, come on then..." to emerge from the wood - probably me and the local gamekeeper share the same lack of pheasant-calling imagination...

Aw!!! CUTE I haven't seen birds in the garden for a while now, but this morning, after the frost, we had a robin on the feeder, then a blue tit. A sparrow sunned himself for a while on the garden wall and later I saw a wren bouncing about the clematis. And all that was during the couple of minutes I was looking out of the window at breakfast!

I have certainly noticed there has been loads more birds to our feeders since we made a pond in the garden....even our neighbour has remarked on it....and 6 cats live next door. (they are all old cats, except one and she goes through our garden ) so the birds are fairly safe... We have had lots of starlings, all sorts of tits, chaffinches (I think) and whens. A family of naughty magpies come in the afternoons for a mosey round. The farm next door has been having owls visit....very exciting, I haven't seen any yet though. I tend to feed more in winter than summer, I do put a little out in the summer, but I think they can also eat some of our many, many slugs and caterpillars with raspberries or black currants for pudding

That is such a lovely photo SO! Lucky you to have had them. Robins are such joyful little birds aren't they? We have them here and they dont half chatter when I'm in the garden. I'd love them to follow me round but as I cant get to spend as much time there as I'd like, they tend to keep their distance.

Finally got the terrace finished and fed the birds for the first time today. I bet it takes them a couple of days before they come.
In Germany birds are not fed all the year around usually as there is only bird food available to buy in the winter months. My Mum used to throw all sorts of things out including fish and chips and bones - her Blackbirds developed a real appetite for mushy peas. Our birds don't even eat bread!
