That is softer climes for you all-right. Just consider yourself lucky LG, yours is more likely to get through winter than mine or Rosefriends.

I know Dutchy I've come to think of you and Rf when I see Buds growing along the sides of walls and in bizzare places.

Yes Budds like that. I once saw one coming out of the side of an apartment building in the city centre of Kassel Germany. They do grow in odd places even here but somehow our garden soil is too wet most of the time and then to ad insult to pain it freezes solid. Somehow Budds do not like that. I noticed on this thread Rosefriend put one in her front garden.... I must remember not to look at it when I visit the coming summer. The poor plant might keel over due to my lethal stare

Wellllll, grab a coffee and put your feet up Dutchy... - if you remember the first special Budd bit the dust in the hard winter 2009 and when you came up in 2010 you chose another one at Herbs. It has been kept alive and flowered really well and looked a dream in 2010/11 and last year started to...mmmh - well not many flowers although the plant was healthy enough. Sooooo I decided to have a look and the roots were packed and the only place that I could find was in the front garden. So that is where it landed and I intended to get it out again and find a place in the back garden as there is no sun in the front from end of Sept/beginning of Oct until we change the clocks in March....however I found OH one day looking out of the kitchen window and he was amazed at how many bees and butterflies were on the bush and bit by bit both of us started to enjoy looking out of the window in summer and seeing the butterflies so I have left it there even thought the place isn't ideal... Sooo - don't you dare give it one of your looks!!!! RF

I am currently scouring the stores for lethal look defying sunglasses. I might find them in time Rosefriend . Jas!!! baby buds in the wings... have ye never heard that there is no such thing in Rosefriends nick of the woods? Or mine for that. Now what about primroses? Are they taking on budd proportions Jasmine ?

Does anyone know if Buzz Budds are likely to come true from seed? I only ask because I have a self sown seedling in the gravel, right underneath the white Buzz Budd.

Oh that's interesting Jilly. I've got the blue one I got from Jasmine a few years back in a pot but it has'nt ever self seeded. I did stick some of the cuttings from when I cut it back a few weeks ago into the ground and so far they're still alive. I've had a look online to see if I could find an answer to your question but I could'nt. All I have found is that not all Budd's come true from seed.

Any babies I've ever found Jilly look a bit like cross pollination babies when they've flowered. I have found babies near Black Knight and Pink Delight and they look somewhere in the middle when they flower if that makes sense - they're not pink and they're not purple - they're sort of a mixture.

I may have to pot it up & see what happens, I was going to ask if anyone wanted it? Best I check if it's going to be a weedy one first

I suspect I'm going to have to say 'bye-bye' to my (very) ancient one, it hasn't any sign of new shoots anywhere apart from high up - I know how to prune them, but how do you prune a shrub back to the lowest shoots when they're 6' up? I might get rid of it - or give it one more year...I've spent tooooo much on replacement shrubs and trees this year.

Why not be brutal and give it a chop right above 1 foot and see what it does? Were it mine it would die but this is a strong uk one. Cruelty sometimes does work.
My mysterious cutting budd is still alive in the cf. I hope I can get it to flower this year if only to find out what it is.

I was going to suggest that too Dutchy, I was visiting my MIL this morning & she had recently taken the pruning saw to one of the ancient Budds in her garden, she thought she'd killed it, but we spotted several new shoots starting when we looked.

Ah see Geranium. That can work.

Post by Geranium on Mar 11, 2013 7:09:33 GMT
OK, that's what I'll do. It looks so awful at the moment. It'll be a case of kill or cure! I can use my pruning saw on some of the 'trunks' but I'll need OH to help with the very thick ones. I was thinking about buying a bow saw. Is that something anyone else uses?

Ah, but could I use one? I can't wield OH's loppers.

I use one Geranium and I think the complete cut back is a good idea.

Yes Geranium it doesn't take a lot of strength.... it's the technique - I can use ours

Thanks - I'll ask OH if I can use his on the Budd. I'll have a go as soon as I can bring myself to go out in the bitter cold! (He's just said he'd prefer to be here while I'm using it, and he's away for the next two days. )

I managed with my pruning saw - it's a stump now. One piece came away in my hand, but the other 'trunks' were all alive. I read somewhere that Buddleias can shoot from under the bark, so fingers crossed, because there are no green shoots at all atm.

Why did you go out in the freezing cold? It could have waited.... honest. Fingers crossed Geranium and if it fails..... whohee an empty space for a lovely new plant But I hope it goes well.

I wanted to get it done, Dutchy. I won't be too bothered if it doesn't regenerate, as I'm not all that fond of Buddleias.
