Rain has stopped play as expected but I've been outside most of the morning so I can't complain. I've put together another wooden compost bin and its half full already. I've been cutting things back and just have a general tidy up. I've chopped the buddleja's back to around half and have saved the cuttings for my pea sticks next year, I was surprised to see there was lots of new growth on them already. There are still a few very stubborn antirrhinums still in flower and some rudbeckia still hanging on. Forecast for tomorrow is dry - fingers crossed

Swept up the leaves from the front. Weeded - amazing how quickly the weeds are still growing. Tidied the Solanum Alba which was again threatening next door's yard. Pruned the blackcurrent - thanks Wee ;D Now relaxing ... cheers ...

Well I did venture outside Missy to shut the chucks up but it wasn't really cold. As I drop the hatch, the girls always have a cluck. It's a lovely sound. They are such placid creatures when in their roost. Always makes me smile.

I've got three hens. Did have a cock, but had to have him put to sleep this year. Couldn't bring myself to see him off. He was a very fine boy and I miss him. The girls have had a serious moult late summer and all are sporting their new colours but they haven't laid for about 3 months now.

Gosh why are'nt they laying Shrubrose. Are they missing the one you put to sleep. Poor RF I think about you and your buddlea when I walk to work as there are hundreds of them everywhere growing out of virtually nothing. It's been really freezing here today but wet and windy.

Hi LNG, I have a theory that the summer's been so lacking in light that it's knocked them off. Add to that, they can 'go off' when moulting, so I guess it's not surprising. But they were such good layers and carried on all through last winter. I expected they might do the same this year. But, it's not to be. They dont actually need a cock to produce eggs only to fertilise them. He often tried but to no avail ;D He was a handsome boy and used to strut around like he owned the place, which I suppose in his mind he did! The girls just used to ignore him!! ;D

This is the second day I've really had an enjoyable time in the garden. It was cold but I was well wrapped up and came in with a lovely glow on my cheeks ;D and my arms ache Chopped the stems of the Oriental lilys that are all in pots and put most of them under cover for winter in the old dog bed part of the poly kennel, a couple are too heavy for me to carry so OH will need to give me a lift with a couple. Removed all the Forget Me Nots and any debris from the top of the pots too so they don't harbour critters or go rotten. Gave a couple of variegated Privets a trim and potted up 30 cuttings for my neighbour, thanks to Andy for the reminder ;D Tidied up some Day Lily leaves that had flopped, found a couple of ladybirds in the leaves so I popped them in the Crocosmia leaves which I don't chop till spring. Topped up my bags of leaf compo with a few strays that still keep appearing. Better to be safe than sorry with the cold nights we are getting I've also tacked some bubblewrap up in the roof of the poly kennel today as well.

Poor hens......are you gonna get a new cock? Just looked outside and it's pouring down Dont know if we will Missy, but doubtful. They dont do a lot for their keep really. And Ginger would be hard to replace in our affections. So we might just stay with the girls for now.

My 3rd day on the trot in the garden has been good ;D Finally got my last lot of my alliminium shelving up in the poly kennel and lined all the shelves with 1" polystyrene. Have 6 lots of shelving in there now and there is no room for anymore I've part bubble wrapped the roof space too, only half of it coz I ran out. Hopefully it will be fairly snug in there over winter for all my bits and bobs. Had a general tidy up again too, theres always something to do Might try and get a few more jobs done tomorrow, buggar the housework, if it's nice out I'm in the garden ;D Now where is my list of jobs

Only thing I did today was watered the plants and babies in the poly and removed a few leaves that were sulking. Picked some brussels and pulled a couple of Parsnips up for T.
The weather has been lousy the last few days to do anything, can't even get motivated to get my list out and look what jobs I could do under the cover of the GH or poly or even in the shed. Hayo you have to have a few glum days I guess, I'll be back at it in the garden in a few days no doubt ;D

Well, the weather is still cold and miserable (although not as windy), so I ventured no further than the mini-GH (beside the back door) to give my cuttings and seedlings some TLC. The sweetpeas are growing incredibly fast in their toilet roll inners; a few of them have true leaves and I'll have to start thinking of pinching them out; two cape fuchsias and a few Solanums (both varieties) are reasonably happy, but a few Penstemon cuttings are looking really miserable. Had difficulty overwintering autumn Penstemon cuttings last year too, although the cuttings I took in the spring have thrived and flowered ... I guess there's a lesson there ;D ... cheers ...
