thank goodness gh, was wondering if yours had germinated karenwl and blacky, I'm going to sow some more tomorrow, someone said not to leave it too much later. the ones I sowed a couple of weeks ago are growing quite long but 2 of the rolls are still empty, have'nt given up on them yet.

Mine are outside LNG and not all of them have germinated, I am a bit worried as they seem to be getting quite leggy - not sown autumn seeds before. I suppose the colder weather will check the growth if it ever comes ....

It's good not to have to disturb the roots blacky, just put the whole thing in the ground, I did this last year and the cardboard just gets broken down in the soil Planted about another 20 or so in the ground today.

At last I've done them, all 17 varieties (imustbemadsmilie) Mmmm (iammadsmilie) ;D In that event I certainly am Chuckles. Twenty varieties (all Matthewman's) sown on Sunday 4th November, ten seeds each of... Richard and Judy | Two-tone Mauve | Eclipse | Mauve | Ethel Grace | Lavender | Milly | Vibrant Magenta | Restormel | Cerise | Queen Alexandra | Crimson | Mollie Rilstone | Pink Picotee on Cream Ground | Noel Sutton | Mid-Blue | Anniversary | Picotee on White Ground | Dawn | Pale Blue Flush | Dorothy Eckford | White | Pink Medley | Pink | Jilly | Cream | Jayne Amanda | Rose Pink on White Ground | Mrs Bernard Jones | Pink on White Ground | Painted Lady | Cherry Red and White | Honeymoon | Pale Lavender | Honeypink | Pink | Dark Passion | Navy Blue | Charlie's Angel | Pale Blue |
I have tried to select as broad a range of colours as possible whilst maintaining my usual main criterion that all of the varieties should be highly scented. As far as propagation goes I'm sticking to my tried and tested method of starting the seeds off in 14 inch (35cm) standard seed trays in the unheated greenhouse. The trays will be protected by cloches until the seed germinates, and when larger enough to handle they will be transplanted into Wilkinson's 3 inch (7.5cm) 'Breeding Pots', as these proved very effective for the 2006-07 crop.

Oh Spruance you are so organised _ the spreadsheet! I've planted all my sweeties. I like the idea of the Wilkinsons breeding pots. I will go to the shop in Kingston near my mum's on Thursday and see if they have any left. My sweetpeas have been planted over a period of two weeks in October and some of mine are poking through already. I am a little concerned about what to do with them now they are sprouting. PJ

9 days on and not a sign of anything happening, maybe I'm being impatient I tend to find that anything up to 3 weeks is not unusual at this time of year Chuckles. It's surprising how quickly they do grow once they've germinated though.

Help! All my sweetpeas (sown in toilet roll inners) are well up and growing furiously. I've already had to pinch them out I sowed two to a roll - at what point should I remove one, or can I just leave them like that? And, if they continue at this rate, they'll be too big for the mini-GH - can I risk planting them out in their final positions? ... cheers ...

someone on another board told me not to plant my toilet roll ones out CC. they say the toilet roll holders will last until spring but I'm not so sure. I don't see the problem planting them in the ground so long as it doe'snt get waterlogged and if you can put them in a reasonably sheltered place so much the better I'd say. I'd leave 2 to a roll if they are both strong and if you are'nt sure you can separate the roots which are no doubt well grown now. They will stop growing soon in any case as the weather gets colder.

Question.
I have asked before but so far only DrBill told me not to do what I plan. I want to sow some sweet peas at Christmas. When all things go well with germination I will place them outside in my cold frame with added isolation. ( It is likely to be January and the shock from indoors to outdoors might kill them. Or should I sow in the cold frame? Has any one ever done this? Do you think it can be successful?

I've never sown sp in dec or jan Dutchy, I think they will need a little warmth to germinate but having said that I sowed my last lot straight into the open ground at the beginning of november and they germinated and are growing. From the point of view of their hardiness, I honestly don't see why you could'nt germinate them inside and then put them in the cold frame with added isolation. They really are very strong. The only thing would be the lack of light, grey days with not much sunshine might just make them weak and leggy. I'm not sure but It would be worth a try. I planted some outside last year, not quite sure how late I left it and they did'nt germinate at all until early springtime. Good luck and keep us posted Dutchy.

I'll start them indoors then and once they are up and running I'll take them out into the cold frame. After all the light should be on the increase after Christmas.

Hello Dutchy I sowed most of my sweet peas in October and they have all germinated. But I also sowed a few as late as December and they have sprouted already. in fact they germinated quicker than some of the October ones. I started them off in a mini greenhouse in a sheltered spot and they look just as healthy as ones planted earlier! PJ

Wow. So your mini GH was probably colder now than in October. I wonder if I should sow my SP in the cold frame or indoors. I had better get my Bubble wrap ready then.
