This morning the front door lock jammed as OH tried to lock it. Basically the key locked the door but couldn't turn any further so he couldn't get the key out.
We had a similar problem last year and called out a locksmith (very expensive) but he couldn't find a problem.
I've tried squirting some oil into the keyhole but sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn't. We can get in and out of the house via our garage, but I wonder if any one has any other suggestions as to what I can do.
Ta, Px

Have you tried WD40 spray in the key hole and in the door mechanism. Then just keep door open whist you turn the key to open and lock, then try weith the door closed. Normally works for me with the back door. Sara

If this is a recurring problem, I would change the barrel on the lock, not so expensive as calling out a locksmith and within basic (screwdriver) DIY skills. It could be that a small piece of the lock , or a bit of old key is loose within the mechanism. WD40 can stain paintwork, so have a rag handy for quick clean up.

Also have a look at the.........don't know what it's called, but the bit that is on the door frame - make sure it hasn't moved out of alignment.

I've put oil in the key hole both inside and outside the house, which does seem to have made a difference.
I'm not sure how easy just changing the barrel will be because it's one of those locks that goes down the entire length of the front door with various bolts. It's not a case of being able to unscrew the door handle and it's all there in front to be fiddled with.
I'll certainly check to see if the door frame has shifted though.
Thanks everyone!

I have similar lock on my back door, the barrels are changeable, as I found out when I lost my keys at my friends house, but it cost me £80 to find out how simple it was. My "friend" threw the keys in the bin later, although she knew I had lost them and hadnt replaced them all She takes minimalism to extremes never before visited.........

Plocket, When the builders come back to do your door and window, Flutter your eyelashes and make them a nice cup of whatever and casually ask can they take a look at the door as you have been having trouble. Sara

Sara, Word of advice: You are talking real doors and locks. I think you will find that Plocket and Sweetleaf are discussing Plocket's sex life, but for discretion are talking in code. You can tell by reading between the lines: "I've put oil in the key hole both inside and outside the house" "...and it's all there in front to be fiddled with" "We can get in and out of the house via our garage" Bear this in mind when chipping in
