I've now also sowed my poppies, burgundy frills you may remember did well last year, they're saved seed. My cat knocked over the whole tray which I'd had the bergamont in but I hope I've saved the 3 tiny ones which had germinated. Sowed 2 more Gardeners Delight too. I sowed the poppy burgundy frills seed you sent me before we went on holiday LG and I've got lots and lots of little seedlings. It looks as though I will have plenty to give away as well as put in my garden! I also sowed 2 lots of sunflowers today - black magic and vanilla ice. If anyone would like some vanilla ice seeds I have lots left and am happy to send them to anyone who would like some. Has anyone tried verbena bonariensis before - I am not having much luck getting them to germinate? Has anyone tried verbena bonariensis before - I am not having much luck getting them to germinate?2007 in November I sowed a whole packet of verbena bonariensis and in March 2008 I was ready to throw the lot away - nothing was showing. I put the pot of them in the corner of the mini GH and forgot them. Around the end of April there were wonderful green bits all over...they were magnificent all summer long. It seemed as though they had all germinated. I put some in the soil and some in pots which are still in the mini GH... The ones in the earth have died, I think but the ones in the mini GH are showing green again. RF

Jasmine well done with the burgundy frills, can't understand why mine have'nt germinated. I'm beginning to wonder if I should have after all bought seed compost instead of ordinary mp. I always buy seed compost but this year I did'nt. Hope i'm not going to pay for it the hard way. I too sowed a whole packet of VB about 2 years ago and got absolutely nothing for my troubles, as Rf says 'tho hang in there you never know but keep us posted. Beanie you've been busy, glad to hear your black Dahlia and co. are doing well for you. I've lost seeds too in the past, I have absollutely no idea where all my saved sunflower seeds have gone, all I have are about half a dozen. I do have a full pk however sent to me by someone doing a campaign to get more wildlife in the garden so I won't be without. Have'nt had a chance to sow any yet.

Mine are in a very warm spot LG - the spare bedroom window sill is the best for light but it is right over a radiator so that might have speeded the burgundy frills on a bit. Biggest twin asked me if I was growing cress this morning - I can see what he means!

I think I need another mini-growhouse and then I can sow some more! I see Lidl have a garden week and on Thursday they are advertising a small one for £16.99 Think I saw one cheaper at B & M last week .. I have sown 4 seeds of Costus speciosa - I wonder who is to blame for me trying to get these to germinate x Tig

Not B & Q, it is the store which used to be called Au Natural around here (dunno if it was the same elsewhere?) but B & M was the parent company and has rebranded all the stores (I think ) And they now stock a wider range of stuff, gardening, household cleaning products, toiletries, as well as all the basketware, cushions, pictures, mirrors, kitchenware and ornaments. x Tig

Sorted the agave montana and sowed 7 yesterday - lovely shiny black seeds Datura number 4 is through today, so that is 100% germination for them - if somewhat erratic! (typical as I only wanted one ) x Tig

The sunflowers I planted have started to come up and the black magic are doing better than the vanilla ice and I think I have 1 tiny verbena bonariensis coming through.

Well done getting your verbena going Jasmine. Do you know there's still no sign of the poppies I sowed and have in the airing cupboard but thankfully those which I sowed direct into the borders are coming along fine. Strange.

That is strange LG . My poppies are coming along fine and my dahlia bishop's children are getting their first set of true leaves.

Oh great, mine are too, as are my colerette dandy (from RF) you can see the darkness of the bishops children's leaves now can't you, compared to other dahalia. My basil and lemon basil are well germinated too

They do have dark leaves. Well done with the basil - I thought that was quite a tricky one to get going too. Lemon basil sounds good.

I tried so many times to get basil to grow and only last year had success. Am trying the lemon basil new this year. Ment to say I have a few cosmos germinated too. The lovliest looking seedligs are the Cerinthe Major purpuranscens which I'm trying this year for the first time too. Good size to work with too with arthritic hands.

I am doing Cerinthe again this year but will start a lot later - they had a race to the stars last year and then a lot keeled over.
I haven't started half of my seeds to be honest - I just haven't got any room left.

I have mine outside RF so hopefully that'll keep them from getting too leggy. They've been out for a while now and seem to be tolerating it well enough. I have them on the windowledge. I still have a good few things to sow too but like yourself don't really have room and there's only so much I can cope with at their early stage, if you know what I mean.

Marigolds in today....All French types
Durango Bee Durango Tangerine Durango Red Durango Bolero
plus Statice (dried flower type)
Pricked out my blue petunia plugs today....i adore these plants as they give off a heady sweet scent all summer and also provide a nice dark colour for bright marigolds to contrast against.
Just got night scented stock to sow and a lovely Californian poppy mix.

Lovely Andy...I think French Marigolds are brilliant, I have them planted all round the veg patch and GH border, plus in the flower border every year. I've sown several varieties recently.

Yesterday I sowed African Marigolds, Vanilla f1 & Crackerjack. Few days ago (kind of in a huff) I sowed another handful of Tithonia - no precision just threw the seed in the tray pressed them down, lightly covered with compo and watered. The secret is they like it rough - obviously ;D
