Yesterday I potted on my Hollyhocks.
Germination results were 62 out of 168 sown. Results were very mixed, I did 7 trays of 24 seeds and germination in each tray was - 1, 2, 8, 10, 11, 13 and 17 so very mixed.
Now all I have to do is keep the slugs and snails off them and wait to see what colours they are ;D
Pansies and Delphiniums doing ok but not large enough to pot on yet.

Well my Hollyhocks survived me being on holiday, a few look a bit dwarfed but most are fairly strong looking plants. The Delphiniums and Pansies look healthy too. Must get my finger out and look what else I can try in the next week. Need to dig the seed box out and have a look, forgotten what I've got now come to that where is my seed box ;D Will definately be doing some sweetpeas in the Over Winter Trials What's anyone else doing or done

Well for the first time I am going to sow some Hollyhocks and Foxgloves and I meant to sow some absolutely gorgeous dark maroon Sweet William for next year - am I too late, or can I give it a go?
Oh also got some Aquilegia but I don't know whether I have enough room - there is only the guest bedroom windowsill and that isn't very big.

Look at all my Hollyhocks ;D I only sowed then on the 6/8 Chuckles - a question please - are you going to leave three in a pot or will you be pricking them out into single pots. As I haven't so much room it would be ideal to have a couple in a pot but only if I can plant them out like that. RF

Welcome back Chuckles. I've done four different types of seeds. Haven't been in the GH since late last week so really should have a look.

Thanks Chuckles.
This morning I have sown Foxgloves, Verbascum and Hollyhocks. I had hoped to put them outside but I think I will leave them in at the moment.

Ok photo updates on some of my home saved seeds Hollyhocks - some looking good some a bit dwarfy, it amazes me how different things can be even though they were sown at the same time. Some are 2 in a pot some are 3. DWARFS Delphiniums not a clue what they are, seeds borrowed as I walked by the plant Soon need to pot them on by the looks Pansies and something else but I can't remember what ;D

Well they look fantastic Chuckles - wish I had waited to see the pics before I did mine - what on earth am I going to do with mine all through the winter. Mind you they haven't germinated yet....
Well done though - I am very envious.

Those look fantastic, Chuckles ;D The foxgloves, aquilegia, sweet williams and Canterbury Bells I sowed earlier in the summer are all planted out now, so the only seedlings left in the mini-GH are Echinacea Purpurea - am really hoping they make it through until Spring when I can plant them out. Good luck with yours, RF - incidentally, if you're short on space I would have through you could put the Aquilegia in one of your GHs, they don't need much heat, so they? Cheers ...

I'm really slow off the mark this winter. The only thing I've got started are some Black Paeony poppies. I saved some of the seed for a friend but also sowed a few for myself. And a few have germinated, although they are still tiny at the moment.

Thanks for that CC - I had it all beautifully worked out in my mind just how I would do a load more seeds with fleece and and and. Then my OH has put a blighter on it by saying - great and what happens if we really get a hard winter (minus 15-20 or more) - where are you going to put all the tiny plants then.Mmmmh - well I have got to try and sort that problem out first before I go any further I am afraid....... RF, I know we have nothing like the weather you have to contend with - but here's a suggestion which may free up a bit of window sill space. For those seedlings which are reasonably hardy (aquilegia, sweetpea etc.), could you make cloches out of large mineral bottles (cut off the bottom half and place it over a 3" pot, so that the pot is fully covered, and then put the 'cloched pot' in your mini-GH (which I'm assuming is in a warmish part of the garden)? Since the cloche fits over the entire pot with a bit of a gap, and the GH shelving is slatted/gridded, there shouldn't be a problem with air circulation/mould ... just a thought ... cheers ...

You have really got some great ideas CC - thanks.
Now then I have put fleece inside th4e GH's all over (well the back and sides), polystryene is on the bottom but air can still get in. I will have to get some water in plastic bottles as we only buy crates of water in glass bottles as OH prefers it. The GH's are on the terrace which gets the sun so I will have to be careful on sunny days that it doesn't get too hot - I can always open up and put a thin layer of fleece over the plants to protect them a bit.
I am rather looking forward to this actually as normally I have nothing to do in the garden from Dec to end of Feb or even longer.
Thanks again
RF

Hi RF ... wish I could take credit for the idea ... it's a friend's (I'll be using the 'cloches' on the pots I can't fit into the green house). Got Monkshood and Sweetpea seeds today, so hope they over-winter OK ... cheers ...

Oh no CPB thats crap the little s@ds. Pop some compo on top of the Delphniums they may sprout new growth. Not sure about the Foxglove though, may be worth a try. If your'e ever my way when your out and about with your sister your'e very welcome to have some of my baby Delps, I'll have spares I'm sure. I have the unknown ones growing and some purple and purple with white centers that I've just sown.

Hi Chuckles ... just noticed that you're sowing Aquilegia 'chocolate soldier'. I sowed them earlier this year and, unlike any other aquilegias, they had a really poor germination rate ... so you might want to sow more seeds than you normally would ... cheers ...
