I haven't got any room in my greenhouse to sow seeds at this time of year It's full of cuttings and overwintering plants. Don't cry I think you could find some room in this GH Isabella ;D You could get OH to make up a wooden frame work that sits on the top of existing staging, it could have removable perspex shelves and a long as you didn't fill the shelves you wouldn't block too much light from the plants below. It could be dismantled when not needed, I'm full of ideas for making more room ;D

Hello Chuckles - do you sow seeds in an unheated greenhouse? We heat 1 of the greenhouses for the cuttings and over-wintering plants, another (without heat) is used for overwintering pots Lilies, cannas, hostas etc, and the third greenhouse ( the one pictured above is used to store ornaments etc. over winter. The plants in the photo are now either in the heated greenhouse or indoors I will take a photo tomorrow to show you what I mean

Yep my GH is unheated. I keep it above freezing by lining most of the sides with 1" white polystyrene to about a foot above the staging. The far end has bubble wrap, then I hang a home made type of roller blind made from canes and bubble wrap from the roof. This is rolled down when it's below freezing and I use loops of wire to hook it on to the black plastic GH hooks you get, this holds it up and in place. It's rolled up when it's not below freezing so I get maximum light. If it is severley cold for a period of time I do have a parafin heater I can use, can't rememer the last time I used it though. I also put pieces of polystyrene on some of the slabbed floor to sit pots on and also on the staging sometimes. When not in use the polystyrene is stored in one half of the shed roof space sat on two pieces of wood. I'm sure you could find room for a few seed Isabella ;D you know you want to

Mmmmmm .... anyone had any experience sowing Monkshood seeds? I sowed them nearly a month ago, tucked them up with plastic cloches in the mini-GH - and nothing is showing at all ... any hints?? ... cheeers ... Not much help to you CC I'm afraid. I've got monkshood in my garden. It was here when we moved in some 11 years ago. I moved it and it comes up every year without me doing anything to it at all. So, in that time it must have produced and shed loads of seed. However, none of it has germinated. It seems very happy where it is and I've often wondered why it hasn't spread itself about. I'll have a go at collecting and sowing some seeds next year though and see what happens. It is a lovely (if deadly) plant and the most beautiful dark blue colour.

Flippin Nora Isabella they are rather full and you certainly utilise the space well, love the shelves I neeeeed some of those ;D But I reckon you could utilise the space in the last one a bit more, room for some staging and shelves in there for flower seeds [/quote]

Thanks for that, Shrubrose - at least now I don't feel it's entirely my fault - there's still no sign of germination. The packet (T&M) said they were easy, but if they don't self seed where they're happy, they're obviously not that easy. It's a shame, because they're lovely plants. Oh, well ...

Sara They always say it is best to buy new as the open bag will have allowed unwanted materials in and good things to evaporate. Beeing mean and Dutch I still use it for the stronger plantseeds. Isabella good grief.... When do you think your plants will begin to invade your house? ;D Now you lot have gone and done it. I want a GH too but I have no space for it Can't set it up at MssK's as this is one of the things she thinks is horrid and ugly. sigh

Looked at my seeds yesterday and the Dictamnus that have germinated is the white ones, and the seeds with the label ? ? ? look like they could be a Poppy of some kind. Thats got the old brain cells wondering where have I collected them from Also, looks like one of my York Hollyhocks has sprung into life ;D I'm quite chuffed with my efforts so far as I've never sown seeds late in the year before and not really done many in spring really

They look great Chuckles - I have some seeds that I tried sowing in July but because of the rotten weather they didn't germinate. Do you think if I gave them another go now under glass they'd catch up? I might just give it a go and see what happens. I've only lost the price of a packet of seeds if it fails after all! Sairey did you have any luck with the Hollyhocks second time around. Mine are showing new shoots from the centre of the plants now, can't wait to see what colour they turn out to be

;D ;DYippee. Just went out to the mini-GH and found that one of the Aconitums/Monkshood has come up. No sign of anything for months, and I'd almost given up and shoved the seed tray to the very back ... the seedling is about 3" tall now ... I sowed 12, so it's not exactly a good rate of success .... now I'll have to give the lone survivor lots of TLC ;D ... cheers ...

Wow, Chuckles - that's a great tale of success. Re. Aquilegia Chocolate Soldier, even those that did germinate and grow last year, which I planted out and gave lots of TLC to, have now disappeared (and all the other Aquilegias are showing lots of signs of new growth). So this year I think I'll try Green Apples and Nora Barlow ... although, who knows, the Chocolate Soldiers may emerge during the next few weeks ... cheers ...

That's a great list there Chuckles, they're all flowers well suited to a cottage garden too which I love. Do you know can you divide out Verbascum? would spring time be a good time to do it? ;D

Jeez you were quick there CC I went back and modified the post toask you about your Aconitum, did they survive ? LNG I've never grown Verbascum so don't really have a clue I have bought plants before and put them in the garden but they just seem to disappear. I wonder who else grows them and can help us

Hope the Chocolate Soldier works for you, Chuckles - I've checked and I think the ones I planted out last year have disappeared/died/whatever All the other Aquilegias are showing new growth - oh well, put it down to experience I guess ... on a brighter note, tomatoes (moneymaker) and chervil sown on the kitchen windowsill have germinated ;D Still no sign of the cannas and I guess it's a bit early for the Echinacea to be showing ... cheers ...
