You've certainly done well MRH. Today I sowed Courgette and Squash and Helanium from purloined seed last year.

I sowed some more cosmos cosmonaut today. I don't know where I am going wrong with cosmos. I even bought new seed just in case the other seed was too old (couldn't find a date on the packet).

My Cosmos have done well this year except for the ones that I really wanted to come through - I had planned all sorts of things with them and I haven't got one!!
I should have just scattered them around - I bet they would have germinated then...everywhere that I didn't want them.

Did you use a heated propagator RF? I wondered if a bit of heat would make a difference

I'm sowing Cosmos too and had much better luck with them last year. I have Sonata after seeing the white ones in the borders on the boards last year. I used the heated prop Jasmine but I've found the germination eratic. I think I have about half a dozen at the same stage as MRH.

I wonder why they germinate so poorly

Wonder where Barbara is she grows lots of Cosmos perhaps she could give us hints.

I'm just thinking that it's Isabella who grows Cosmos. Anyhow it would be interesting to find out if others have difficulties with germinating too.

My Kunzea Baxteri have germinated ;D Isn't cosmos a native desert plant of origin? I thought it likes warm conditions to germinate and slightly damp, but not wet compost, and only very lightly covered as they need light to germinate I think. I am sowing some, but I'm running out of space. I will sow my nasturtiums direct, outside next month, I collected rather a lot!

The light bit might be it Tig - I have a tendency to bury seeds too far down.

Out of the cosmos seeds I planted on the 12th 7 are already up. I put them on the boiler this time. Don't know if the heat made a difference or if it was because it was new seed

I've just potted on some Cosmos, the germination was fine. I wonder if its the type of compost you are using. I alway mix in sand and vermiculite so the compost doesn't stay sodden. I also covered the seeds lightly with a mix of vemiculite and compost through a sieve - still time to sow some more

I am going to use vermiculite next year. Carol Klein was saying how useful it was at preventing seedlings rotting. Have lost a few seedlings because they got too damp I reckon.
19 baby cosmos this morning - will definitely give them some heat next year...if I remember.
