Had to fire up the heated propagator at the weekend for yet more chilli seeds so I've tried a few of the Dierama seeds and some Penstamons that came free with Amateur Gardening. I've also sown the other half of the pack of Ravenswing, I'm not very hopeful but they've got more chance in a pot than in a packet i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif Jillyx

Good for you Jilly, I really must find some motivation and get mine going. If I'm honest I don't even know where to lay my hands on my box of seeds The heated prop is definately in the top shed ;D

I had my heated propagator out for my boxing day onions. I must have a look tomorrow to see if I can use it for anything else.

I need to ask Tig how and what with those Aster Duchese seeds she send me. Not a clue when they need doing. Not sowing much these days. Boxing day onions some up but the SP are still dormant. How does one keep loo rolls properly watered If the top dries out the poor SP are never going to make it and if the bottom stays too wet the roll collapses. I am going to plant some Nectaro thingummy I got for a snip at the GC and I got some cheap Snowdrops in the green that need to go in asap too. We get a mild week so they should all be fine.

I'll sow them later today into the toilet roll inners that I've already prepared. ;D I've sown Cosmos Sonata and Brightness Mix. African Marigold which are left over from last year or the year before and came from Carolann. They did really well last year. I'm itching to sow more things but won't have room at the moment. Is anyone else sowing?

LG you are welcome... erm did you sow them yet? They are a bit old and want soaking for some 24 hours in water first I think.

No problem, I'll leave them overnight and sow them tomorrow then, thanks Dutchy. To be honest, it's only recently I've soaked sweetpea seeds. I never used to.

If you get them into loo rolls that are presoaked and the sowing compost is very moist that is like pre soaking anyhow I suppose. I just am not so trusty of these seeds. I sowed 8 after soaking and so far have 2 up. I did some without soaking in the GH but have not been able to go there yet to see what they do or not. I HATE FLU. sorry that was enough about that

I'm sorry to hear that, Dutchy. Keep warm! I did plant my Antirrhinums - I was disappointed at the number of seeds in the packet - it said '70' but there couldn't have been!

Dutchy the aster seeds duchess blue ice, nothing special just standard annual growing www.mr-fothergills.co.uk/seeds-plants-gardening/13869/aster-duchess-blue-iceToday I've sown some Ricinus communis "Carmencita", only 6 seeds in the pack. I was going to leave them for a few weeks but Carol Klein was planting some out in her garden on last nights programme and said she sowed them in January, she's in Devon and I'm half way up country! I do hope they grow x Tig

They should grow Tig, I was given some seeds years ago (when I really didn't have a clue about seed sowing) & they did really well. The Penstamons are all up & have moved out to the windowsill & the Dieramas have all germinated , you sow them on the surface & it's fascinating to watch the little white shoots growing a tiny bit each day. Yesterday I sowed some Bishops Children & Cerinthe (thanks LG i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif ). I did sow a few of the Cerinthe last Autumn & they grew so fast I planted them out, it looks like they made it through the Winter i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/shocked.gif , they're not exactly happy but definitely still alive. I hummed and arred about scarifying them and giving them a soak Geranium, but decided just to bung em in, on their sides, and keep my fingers crossed. I've sown them in fairly well draining seed compost and watered from the bottom with luke warm water initially. They are getting some bottom heat as I have them on the floor in the front bedroom where the central heating pipes run under the floorboards. They are in individual 3" pots with clear covers on each one (recycled dessert pots ) I've just ordered some 'impala' to try as well x Tig

With ricinus I always soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours or so before sowing them individually straight into 4" pots in gentle heat. I've got 2 sorts, Impala and a purpley one. I'm going to wait until late February/early March before I sow anything this year...we're in the midlands and altho I live in a sheltered spot it aint the temperatures but the hours of daylight that I have to watch. If I sow any early everything ends up all leggy.

You need to be patient Auricula, there's just no point when you're going away. I've realised I'm going to have tons of seedlings to be looked after when I'm away at the end of march.Still I have a good friend who will look after them. Well done Jasmine getting your seeds off and running, the rose just took a bit longer than the snowflake. I've sowed some Mrs KEndal Clarke today. (Thanks to Jilly for the seed).
