Well done with the Ricinus, hope they continue to thrive. You're doing well with your seeds Tig. The sweetpea that Hannah and Aoife (courtesy of Jasmine) sowed 22/1 are starting to poke up. Cosmos Sonata and Brightenss mix are up and already leggy. I've been sowing this morning. Dahalia Dwarf Border Mix, they're old seeds and might not work, Bishops Children, Osteospermum Daisy Mae Mix, Splish Splash, saved seeds and Cleome (thanks again Tig, I hope they do for me.)

I am waiting for the compost to warm up a bit more before I sow anymore......it still feels a bit cold when I stick my finger in it.

Jas, I think I've put the molinia seeds somewhere safe - so safe I can't ruddy find them I've been through all my boxes and unless they have got pushed in with something else (which has been known to happen) they are defo hiding from me! I'll have another look later, but you can put money on me finding them when it too late to sow!!! x Tig

They should be different Geranium. I really like white, it seems to bring other colours to life. I've been doing some experiments this morning ;D Having found the molinia transparent seeds (thanks Jas) I had read somewhere that they germinate best in the 'wild' following fires .... hmmm, didn't want to have a bonfire so I decided to try burning some toast, then putting the seeds on top under a metal bowl. After fifteen minutes cosying up with the charcoal I sowed them and scraped some of the burnt toast onto the compost surface (the rest went out for the birds, toast not the seeds!). Done another pot after popping them in a bag and filling it with smoke, and a control pot which were untouched. Just watch none of them ruddy germinate x Tig

Good grief I just bunged mine in some compost Tig. I'd be very interested to know if you have any luck with the ones you've subjected to bush fire conditions! I was going to stick mine in the fridge if they didn't get going in a bit.

My sister has the family heated propagator atm and I don't expect it back for a few weeks...sort of curtails any ferocious sowing. However...I may nip into wilkinsons tomorrow and get meself another little one as I have some colocasia seeds that I'm quite anxious to get started. All depends how tired I am after work.

Post by Cheerypeabrain on Feb 8, 2011 17:48:37 GMT
I wasn't too tired!
Colocasia Fallax
Kirengeshoma palmata
Verbena Bonariensis
Digitalis Mirabelle
Antirrhinum Royal Bride (last year's leftovers)
Coleus Black Dragon
Actea Quinata
Cobaea Scandens
All in 3" square pots, seed compost (new horizon) and placed in the little heated propatator.
In the GH I potted up 2 chocolate cosmos, 1 zantadeschia red sox and 4 canna Picasso....top dressed with grit and put all the pots in a large unheated propagator on the staging.

Growing from seed has to be up there with my most FAVOURITE things to do... ;D just can't be beat. I'm always full of anticipation and have 'eyes bigger than my garden' syndrome...I still have lots and lots of seeds still to sow, lysanthus (2 varieties), dahlia Bishop of Llandaff, cerinthe (ooh they can go in soon!), cosmos (sensation, ladybird red and sonata) EIGHT varieties of French marigolds, tagettes, heliotrope.....and many, many more...and that's before I start in on the vegetables....

I didn't get round to doing these yesterday, so this morning I've sown Ricinus Communis Impala Morina Longifolia Helleborus purpescens Erythronium revolutum The first two are in the front bedroom and the other two are outside. A downside of scraping burnt toast onto the compost surface of the molinia transparent was some fungal growth this morning I've dealt with it and put the pots in the cold frame, see if that makes them realise how lucky they were to be in the warm ;D x Tig

I've no molinia showing - perhaps I should set fire to mine!
However, this morning I found that the tithonia had sprouted (and it is 2 years old now!) and my borage seeds have sprouted too in the coir pellets - so they do work!

Well done Jasmine, I've tried and tried to grow lavender and never had much success. I have 3 tiny seedlings from last autumn's sowing and that's it.
