They do look very spindly LG - bit like antirrhinum seedlings in fact!

;D That is tiny Jasmine. The 3 that I have and are a couple of months old are short and fat, rather like weeds actually.

I didn't get another one..... ;D
My sister's letting me have the big heated propagator back at the weekend...still much too early for most of my seeds tho. I can't subject any seedlings to the low light levels we get until March-April.

That's a shame - they're sooo useful! I'm glad you're getting the other one back soon. I got my Calendula 'Neon' sown 3 per 3" pot, and Silene 'Firecracker' in a seed tray in the prop. I had to squeeze everything up to get it in! I was disgusted to see how few seeds there were in the packet, though. I'll have to hope for a high rate of germination. I was pleased to see that four pots of dahlias now have shoots!

I've been doing some experiments this morning ;D Having found the molinia transparent seeds (thanks Jas) I had read somewhere that they germinate best in the 'wild' following fires .... hmmm, didn't want to have a bonfire so I decided to try burning some toast, then putting the seeds on top under a metal bowl. After fifteen minutes cosying up with the charcoal I sowed them and scraped some of the burnt toast onto the compost surface (the rest went out for the birds, toast not the seeds!). Done another pot after popping them in a bag and filling it with smoke, and a control pot which were untouched. Just watch none of them ruddy germinate x Tig Hi Tig - just by chance, I was reading my RHS magazine today and came across an article on this very subject. You can get a 'smoke disc' which you put in a dish of water, then soak the seeds in it for 24 hours! Then you plant them at once in a mix of JI 1 plus some sand. In this country, the smoke discs are available from www.jungleseeds.co.uk I hope that helps if your experiment doesn't work! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif

Thanks Geranium, but how very dare you suggest my experiments won't work ;D I am reknowned for my alternative & innovative approaches to seed sowing .... well maybe reknowned is the wrong word, as my efforts are often followed by others posting this smiley I do try though ;D x Tig

Smoke discs don't sound half as much fun as a bit of arson in your kitchen! ;D

I seem to have lost the knack of seed sowing. I think I've had the compost either too wet and they drown or it dries out too quickly.

Thanks Jasmine. I do hope so. That's actually why I bought the Dahalia bulbs, just in case my seeds don't come up for me. Perhaps it's just too early.

I'm orf out to do a bit of sowing, need to find things that like 'cooler' conditions, as I'm fast running out of indoor space and must keep some for my toms and peppers. Don't worry yet LG, just keep your sowings as warm as you can. I find watering from the bottom rather than the top seems to help not to over-wet the compost Nice selection there Andy, have you shifted your @rse yet? x Tig

Thanks Tig. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I sowed my leeks this morning in a black meat tray from M&S it's a good size and nice and strong. Andy, nice selection, they should do well for you on your new propagator.

I am VERY smug today. Last autumn I sowed a few astrantia and hellebore seeds in little pots and popped them into the CF...not expecting to see anything from either and today I've discovered that BOTH have germinated! Sooooo chuffed

And so you should be, very well done CPB. ;D I don't know about Hellebore but Astrantia are difficult to germinate.

I've sown Cosmos Rubenza, Purity and Cosmonaut, Nasturtium Jewel Cherry Rose and Apricot Delight (thanks for those LG) and Echinacea Magnus. I've re-sown my antirrhinum too. I made the mistake of trying to thin them out - disaster
