Well done Cheery - especially the hellebore - I've always been a dismal failure with them.

Jasmine I usually leave them until they're quite mature and try to sow them thinly if I can. They're so tiny, I loose a lot when transplanting them too. It's extra special when you sow seed you've collected or someone has collected for you I always think.

5 out of the 6 Ricinus Impalas sown on the 9th are through this morning That is exactly the same germination result as I had with the Carmencita! I wonder if there is one dud seed for every 6 sent out! I've sown some save phlox paniculata 'Laura' seeds which should have gone in last autumn , also some pulsatilla vulgaris 'red cloak' and ptilotus exaltatus Joey aka Pink Mulla Mulla. Was going to sow some sweetpeas outside, but the hailstones stopped play! x Tig

Well done Tig, you're doing well. I've got 1 Echinacea up but I'm sowing nothing more until I come back from Disney at the beginning of April.

Sounds like everyone is off to a flying start this Spring, probably because we're all confined indoors by the weather i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif I realised to my horror that my propagator was nearly empty last night (that will never do). So I traipsed up the garden in the dark & found the compost & vermiculite & sowed another pot of Bishops Children, after LG kindly sent me some my Mum said she'd like a few so I bought a packet too. The first lot are already up & in the spare room. Also sowed a pot full of Tithonia & a few more Cerinthe & Lilla Luzzi chillies. Jillyx

That's not bad - 2 days and the cosmos are already up! I've also got some more borage seedlings, 6 little artichoke plants and I can see the first dierama coming up.

I'd forgotten they could take a while Jilly. I was worried about the coir pellets and whether they were going to be any good but they seem to be ok - just as good germination with them as seed compost. How old are you dierama babies?

Wow Jilly well done you. I thought they were difficult too but you seem to have the hang of them. They'll be big soon (couple of years is nothing ) You lot have loads on the go already. I am still waiting. No point in getting them up and running if the neighbour has to do the honours halfway March. She is the best neighbour one can get but a tad heavy handed with the watering can.

What do you all use to water seedlings I fing the watering can too strong even whem I'm careful. I looked yesterday for a smaller one but no luck, so I think I'll buy a big pepper pot and try that.

I use one of those bottle top sprinklers when the seedlings are a bit bigger...but when the seedlings are teeny I tend to just mist them with a spray....

I have all mine in trays and I water them from the bottom not the top Barbara. Every one of the ricinus have now germinated so 100%. Noticed I have one morina longifolia (sown on the 9th) through today, and also one of the pink mulla mulla looks to have germinated already x Tig

I see others are sowing seed already...even though its a bit early. I have sown cosmos early to see if they will flower earlier than when I sow in March; also tomato;peppers;chives;flat leaved parsley; french marigolds.....all through and some potted on. They are snug on the hot bench in the greenhouse with my sprouting dahlias (a few cuttings taken already). I'm trying some Adenium and Abutilon hybrids this year..for growing in the conservatory i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif

Welcome aboard Amber, yes the urge to sow seeds and try to get an early start always rules over knowing it's probably too soon.

The only Green Wizard I know of is a Rudbeckia Chuckles, and very nice it is too there is a green echinacea, think that ones called Green Envy I've sown some 'exotic' seeds this morning, but they are a secret, so I'm not posting what unless they germinate ;D Jilly you are soooo right about the challenge of finding space once you start potting on!!! They don't take up much room in the seed trays but once they need their own pots I can't move and OH starts pulling his miserable 'why do you do this every year' face!! I'm not sowing anything else indoors for another month. (keep reminding me peeps!!) x Tig

Leave the orchids in the conservatory "says I"......when I came back they were full to the brim with water!!!!...some I didn't notice for weeks and weeks....only when I noticed mildew on the blinds!!! and a funny smell....grrrr......Never ask anyone now....Are you off on holiday mid-March then..?...so am I.......am going to rig up a capilliary action thingemybob i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif ....I also have some of those Bigga bags which are pretty good....I'm sure the stuff outside will get well watered from the sky...lol i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif

Bad memories for me too heavy handed FIL, lost loads of seedlings, young plants and begonias. The last thing I said was don't let things sit in water, the begonias had rotted and the compost and water were stagnant. I reckon he'd filled the trays to the top the day I left in the hope they'd last the full 2 weeks I'm not panicing just yet about space as I only sow small quantities I'm itching to do some potting on though. I even have a few trays filled with compo ready and waiting for seeds that I want to grow more of or for ones that failed first time around, Mrs bloody organised ;D Cheery, I have a tin of cheshunt compound in the shed, could put some in a plaggy bag and send via posty if you like. I'm sure the sniffer dogs won't pick up the smell. Let me know, I have your addy somewhere. Thats it Tig, Green Wizard is a Rudbeckia. I'm a when it comes to remembering names ;D

I've just potted up a few Bishops Children, luckily there were only 6 that needed doing. I've had a bit of a juggle & fitted them in. I'm the last person who should complain about lack of space, some of you may remember last year, OH made me a special shelf unit for the spare room window sill. Unfortunately I thought it would be a really good idea to fill it with chillies over winter, forgetting of course that the chillies probably won't be able to move to the mini GH until about April at the earliest i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif Jillyx
