Despite telling Jenny today that I was'nt going to sow any more seeds, I sowed Rosefriend Orange Cosmos this evening. I have them in the heated propagator. Fingers crossed. Some of my dwarf Cornflowers and Calendula are up.

Yesterday I soaked some saved ricinus seed and today I've sown ten - I'm not optimistic that they'll germinate as they were collected after the temperatures dropped (just watch me end up with 10 )

I just bet it's going to be 10 Tig My Rudbeckia are mostly all up, but I don't think I'm going to move them out of the heated propagator this weekend, poor little things , just going to have to keep an eye on them to make sure they're not getting too leggy. The Cleome aren't doing anything much, I know it said they needed fluctuating temperatures, but I think moving them out of the propagator at night might have been a bit too much of a fluctuation, even for them, they can stay in there for a bit I think.

I have a suggestion for the cleome Jilly - they do like fluctuating temps but they also like more hours darkness than some seeds. Try keeping the tray covered for 16 hours and allowed light for 8 hours. It has worked for me in the past

Thanks for the tip Tig, I'll try that this weekend, it might be a bit more difficult during the week as I'm out of the house all day, but I could probably do near enough.

Sowed a big tub with sweetpeas today and put some along the edge of the veg area. Not a clue what any of them are as they were saved seed from 2 years ago

Today I've sown some more saved Cerinthe seeds, I want to have some to give to Jenny if they germinate. I've also sown Rosefriend Dahlia seeds some Redskin that I had left from a few years ago and the Figaro sent for this year as well as what was left of my own last years Bishops Children.

I can't sow anything until the weather warms up and I can move some of the overwintered plants out of the greenhouse

I've sown some outdoor seeds, geranium wallichianum buxton's blue and galtonia viridiflora. Francoa sonchifolia and a purple campanula have been brought indoors but need fluctuating temperatures.

There's a lot to be said for just bunging things in a pot of compost & seeing what happens Auricula, what ever you do don't stress about it. You can obey all the instructions to the letter or just do what you think & in my experience they'll either grow or not depending how they feel, either way . I tried to wean the tiny Rudbeckia seedling out of the propagator yesterday as they were getting a bit leggy & they promptly all collapsed , I've put them back in to see if they revive.

Oh dear Jilly I hope they're ok. At least it's early enough to sow again if you still have seeds. I was explaining to the girls at the weekend just what you've said about doing everything right and still not having any success. We sowed Rosefriend bush Tomatoes yesterday and I hope to do some more seed sowing today. It is March after all.

I'm glad I said that about not having success all the time Ladygardener . The Rudbeckias are just keeling over one & a time, they're back in the propagator ( again ) but they can't stay in there for ever & there is only one of 2 left that look like they might do something. I seem to remember having the same problem when I sowed a whole pack of Cherry Brandy the other year, so I think I just don't get on with Rudbeckias. The Cleome have been in & out of the propagator, under newspaper some of the time since Tig tip, but still nothing & I've got no sign on the Delphiniums either (but they were old see that I was using up, so I wasn't expecting anything much). Never mind, they all might get another weeks reprieve because of the cold weather forecast, but if there's still no show by next weekend, everybody gets turfed out to the plant stand outside, as I need the space for Cosmos, Tithonia & Toms, let that be a lesson to them

Sometimes it's just like that with some plants Jilly. I sowed 2 sets last year and 1 set this year of Bright and Beautiful Cosmos and I've had no luck with them. Perhaps someone else would. Same with the ordinary Cosmos this year, they're just not germinating for me. Perhaps I need to wait a few weeks more.

I never stress about it though Ladygardener if something doesn't work, you can usually bet that something else will, so it evens itself out eventually.

You're right Jilly there's no point letting it upset you. One year some things will do great and you think they're dead easy, the next year nothing at all. This happened with me for ages with Basil.

LG - I sow my Cosmos about the same time as I sow my tomatoes -about the third week in march and I usually get good germination

I've got lots of little Tweedia babies from the seeds Rosefriend sent me Are the hardy when they're full grown?

That is fantastic Jasmine - well done - don't forget it is a climber - small one though... No it isn't fully hardy - I would think GH plus fleece for you would do to overwinter it....make sure you get some more seeds this year - the seed pods are wonderful!! The Asplecias (sp) tuberosa is fully hardy. RF

I'm very pleased with the Tweedia - so far, so good!

I've not sown the tweedias yet, but it's good to know you've got them to germinate Jasmine I'm not clever, just patient The asclepias need frost, I got them to germinate by growing them in the ground sown in Autumn. They took forever to appear. I had popped a label in where I'd sown them, but as time passed and the soil had been disturbed because the label got hidden among other plants I'd more or less given up. Then I spotted an 'unusual' clump of 'weeds' and took a piccie for RF to tell me if she thought it was them! I think I waited about 9 months!!! They haven't flowered yet, although I expect them to this year. I moved one last year and it didn't seem to mind. Cosmos though is one of my regular failures - I'm hoping to succeed this year by sowing them at the same time as Pam
