Pricked out some Cosmos yesterday & planted them deeply, as they'd gone really leggy. Resowed some more just in case. Also sowed Tithonia, Malva & 2 sorts of Zinnias.

I'd pricked out some Dahlia Bishop of Llandoff that I'd sown a while back. I've a few different containers with different Cosmos sown in them and one lot are very very leggy. I'll have to pot them on tomorrow. Barbara once you've got them you'll always want them, Cosmos are such a wonderful flower and they last for ages and ages if they're dead headed. What type are you growing?

They are a dwarf variety Ladygardener, I'll let you know the name if they have one tomorrow. I've put the seed tin away for the night.

I've sown broad beans imperial longpod, peas hurst greenshaft and some dwarf french beans ferrari. I've pricked out some Tithonia, (thanks to Jilly for the seeds) fingers crossed they all come on ok for me. A lot of my seedlings die off when I transplant them, I think I damage the roots with my clumsy hands. I need to sow some more cosmos and some sweetpea to have late in the season.

I pricked out some Ammi Majus seedlings that had been growing in the growhouse since autumn, pricked out a tray full & left them in there & planted the rest out as they are hardy annuals so should be OK. After being reminded by Ladygardener, I thought I'd better get round to sowing the African Bride, I did some in a tray in the grow house but also sowed a small row direct, see if that makes them a little less weedy. I re sowed a couple of pots of SP's as although all the ones I did in the autumn are fine the ones I sowed a few weeks ago I only got 1 to germinate. Also resowed some Zinnia as I'd only got 2 or 3 of each type come up. I'm going to have to prick out my Tithonia soon too LG.

I sowed some seed I'd saved from argyranthemum frutescens madeira crested pink yesterday. I am going to sow some zinnias, nicotiana & thunbergia tomorrow, leaving cosmos until next month as they grew too quick last year!

That's a pretty little argyranthemum Tig. Some of the cuttings I took last year have grown into substantial plants overwinter out back. I'm hardening them off at the moment but will bring them back inside tomorrow night as the temp is set to freeze. Jilly, have you not had much luck with your SP. I sowed some recently from a pk that Jenny bought me and I see some of them are up. I'm going to sow some more for sure.

All the SPs I sowed in the autumn are doing great Ladygardener, & are all out in the garden already. Of the ones I sowed a few weeks ago (I did a module tray of each of them) none of the Jilly have come up & only one of the Mulberry Mix, but I do have a feeling it may have something to do with the compost, as I've had to re sow quite a few of the seeds I sowed that week (think it might have been an old bag from the GC). I've sown some more Jilly & Mulberry mix in some different compost, still left the others though as they may come through when the weather warms up a bit.

SP are funny Jilly, I sowed a load of Hi Scent and only a couple came up then I sowed again in another pot and they came up ok but after all that time, some more of the original ones came up as well, strange how it takes some such a long time. I hope you get Jilly to come up for you. I've grown them before ages ago and they're lovely.

I've sown some Dwarf Cosmos that I inted to grow in a pot but have dozens of unidentified seedlings growing in pots that I've sown other things. I think I'd reused compost with perlite that I'd previously sown seeds that did'nt germinate. I'll have to let things grow up a bit before I identify them, I should have known better.

I sowed some cosmos & cardoons last week but had to put them in the WIG as I've got no space left on windowsills. Since I sowed the temps have dropped below freezing a couple of times so I was more or less convinced they would come to nothing. Had a peek under the bag I have covering them today and I can see signs of germination on the cosmos!! (nothing yet on the cardoons though) Last year I took some seeds off a couple of the candelabra prims & two other types I'd bought at an open garden event. I wasn't that hopeful anything would appear ... now how on earth am I going to thin these out!!!

You have your work cut out Tig,! Yesterday I sowed Rudbeckia Chocolate Orange, Dianthus Rainbow loveliness, Dianthus Superbus, Tagetes Paprika, Foxglove Pams Split, Gypsophlia Elegans Kermesina, Sunflower Earthwalker and Sunflower Vincents Mix. I also potted on some Dahlia - Bishop of Llandoff, Pom Poms and Yankee Doodle. I potted on some pansy tasty mix and a few others that I can't even remember. My greenhouse is so full that things are being hardened off during the day and will be out by the start of next week, weather permitting.

Looks like you have your work cut out aswell theinsidegardener I'm as I used to love sewing seeds but don't have the time these days. Tig I've done the same before and if you leave them until they are well into true leaf stage they do come apart very easily, more easy than plants with stems if you get what I mean. What they stray you've got in there

Chuckles, I go in all guns blazing and then normally lose lots of them as I dont put in the effort to keep them going . As it stands my cosmos are like trees because they are so leggy, they desperately need repotted or I'll be in danger of losing them. In January I wrote out all the seeds I was going to plant month by month (how organised lol) but as I look at it now I only did a few of the ones on the list and ended up buying more!! What I did think was mad was some of the seed packets said they had around 100 seeds in them (e.g. Pams Split) but I managed to dispense them ALL into about 4 seed tray sections - that should be fun if they all generate!!!!

Tig, You did well with your candelabra primula did'nt you. Pricking out is one of the jobs I have a love hate relationship with. I'm always afraid that with my shaky hands I'll do damage to them and often do but somehow I end up with at least some of what I want.

I think this is a good example of seed that needs to be sown fresh LG! I have tried to grow candelabra primula from bought seed several times with very limited success, which I why I wasn't expecting a good germination rate! I'm going to fill a 40 cell seed tray and see if I can get some of them separated out, cocktail stick at the ready

Good luck Tig, I had a scatter about the borders with some spare seeds that I had yesterday, I have got a nice bed with barriers all round to sow them in, but after waiting for ages for any signs of life from the African Bride, they were just starting to show a bit of green when some *%!!!% cat (either mine or next doors) jumped the barrier & has dug a big hole right in the middle.... & left a deposit. So now I've just put in little seed drills all round the borders in the hope that some things will come up as a surprise.
