Well done Tig, I know how much of a strain that must have made on your bones. Jilly, cats can be a real pain in the gardens can't they! Jenny's neighbour has 2 beauties but they seem to leave his garden alone and come over to hers.

Yes Barbara, I sowed them in the border though as I find my echinacea seem to germinate better in situ. Nothing so far has popped up.

I've potted on the dahlias I grew from seed, watered them with a diluted growmore, the roots on them are pathetic, do you think bottom heat would help.?

Post by Ladygardener on Apr 23, 2015 10:27:26 GMT
Yes I'm sure it would help them Barbara, but if you could set them in a sunny spot that could help as well. I've moved some of mine out to the growhouse along with some of the cosmos.

I have found a pack of salvia nemerosa, sent to me by someone on here Thanks, now, do I sow straight where it's to grow or start it off in a tray. Thanks in anticipation.

Pop them in the soil where you want them to grow Barbara, keep moist until germinated then let them dry out between waterings if possible. I would also sow a few in individual pots just in case the s & s brigade get to them before they are big enough to fend for themselves. They are quite drought tolerant once they get established.

Front garden then Tig, thanks, was it you who sent them, ? I think I recognise the little envelope.

Could have been, I don't keep lists of what I've send once they've been dispatched - does the envelope say if they are Caradonna? Think that was the last one I collected seeds from. If they don't germinate let me know & I'll try and get a cutting of it.

Im wondering if anyone has sown cosmos direct yet, just waiting on my dahlias hardening, then will get them in the ground soon, when i get the copper rings for them, I will then proceed to sow cosmos direct hopefully, as so warm here now,, i cant see any frost coming.

I've never had much luck with things I sow direct wendya and have never sown Cosmos direct, only ever in cells or pots. I'd say go for it at this stage 'tho, you're in London.

I always sow Cosmos directly wendya, - basically because I forget to do them at the right moment - infact I have become a "direct sower" for a lot of things these days....I do try and tell myself that they have two chances but I am always upset if they don't germinate...Cosmos have always done well with me though..

Thanks Ladies i will get them sown in next week then when i get my dahlias in they did so wonderful last year sowing direct, i was amazed. My only worry really is squirells and foxes that may trample them at night, those squirrels think they're in a playground. And i only saw a fox last night, in the dark side of the planters, he then jumped up the wall and onto the garage roof, the industrial grease didnt work on him glad i saw him as would have just blamed on the kids lol but i don't mind he was very careful and did not trample like the kids would have, so i will excise Mr Fox

Pleased that Mr- Fox gets a respite - as bad as they can be for country folk, I do rather like them wendya,... Tig, theinsidegardener, Ladygardener, andy, Barbara, wendya, OH wants some Caraway seeds (Carum carvi) - if I can get some seeds that is - am I going to regret sowing these in the garden??

It's a biennial & will self seed if the conditions are right (not sure about your cold winters though). Should be easily recognisable so you can pull out what you don't want. Pretty flowers, good for insects as well as humans

A bit late, I've sown some more zinnias, eschscholzia californica, nasturtiums, calendula Bronze Beauty & cautleya spicata. Apart from the latter the others are all in the growhouses, now I just need the weather to warm up a bit!

I think they'll be fine Tig, we've had such cool weather these past few weeks anyhow. I've sown some night scented stock again. I have a container full of it already, nice sized seedlings but I want more. I've also sown some different coloured Pansy from saved seeds, they're old seeds now so it was either sow them or chuck them out.

Good thinking Tig, things have been so slow this year I'm sure anything sown now will soon catch up, in fact I might sow a few more Zinnias as I've still got some left.

Over 100% germination of the zinnias (appears some seeds must have been stuck together ) Thought I'd share this on here, I pinched the tops out of the first batch to try to get them to bush up (plus they had got a bit leggy), stuck the prunings in some water on the north facing kitchen windowsill and surprise!!! They've rooted
