That's a great idea Tig, bit late for me though, b****y S&S have eaten nearly all the Zinnias I put out the other week , mostly my own fault though as I let the self sown Poppies get to close.

Ah thanks for that tip Tig. So if I buy one I can get ten or more of the same colour providing there are that many tips to nip out. ( seeds failed but they were very old )
I suppose one can do this with loads more plants. Should we make a list?

Well worth a try Tig, lose nothing if they don't take. I'll be sowing wallflowers today, lots of them for here and the lotty, I think Sharon might like a few as well.

I've just sown some dianthus, I know it's late for them but I thought I'd give it a go.

You can overwinter them anyhow Barbara and hopefully they'll bloom next year. Mine from last year did'nt flower but I'm hoping they will this year.

I sowed some beetroot yesterday, Burpees Golden - would be great if they decide to grow for me. Having watched the GW piece on coloured daffodils a few weeks back I had taken off some plump seed heads I'd missed and put the stems in water outside. They started to go a bit mouldy looking after a while so I removed them and left them on a pot of old compost to see if they'd dry out, and promptly forgot about them. They were dry, & wrinkled, but I thought I'd prise them open and see what the inside looked like and much to my surprise some of them had tiny little bulbils inside! Not what I was expecting at all. I found about eight which I have popped into some gritty seed compost and will see if anything develops. I think I will have a 7 year wait for any flowers

Tig, you have the patience of a saint. Good luck. Your Hellibore seedlings are still alive and well here.

Last year I saved a seed pod from my Maltese cross, I put it in an envelope in my seed tin, last week I sowed the contents into a tray of compost, I now have about 100 seedlings, what I do next with them I have no idea.

If I were you I'd get them into the ground. Is it the Maltese Cross Poppy? If so then I'd kind of lift them like slices of cake and plant them out in groups just like that Barbara. They don't like to be transplanted but I've found that works for me although I do loose some.

No Ladygardener, not the poppy, it's a tall perennial. Lychnis.

Ah yes I know the one you mean. I've never grown it but I've googled it and from what I see, just treat it like any other seed. grow it on a bit then plant it out. It says they're either bi annual or perennial. My next door neighbour has one, just one tall plant but I'd say they'd make quite a show if there were a few of them together in a group. It's smashing looking Barbara, such a vibrant colour.

I have a few blue Scabious Fama seeds. Although it says on the pack to sow in March, I've heard you can sow in autumn and overwinter in a cold frame. Anyone know?

Its okay, asking the obvious again, I think. Googled it and August/Sept is mentioned. Will try that.

Just out of interest, thi is what it said about autumn sowing.
'The annual scabious - which is, in fact, a short-lived perennial but I always treat it as an annual, sowing new seed every year - is the most miraculous performer in my garden. I sowed the seed late last autumn and it started flowering in early June. The plants were 5ft tall by early August. I hadn't picked or dead-headed them enough and, although they still had lots of flowers, they were also covered in seed heads like furry sea urchins. Wanting to give them a new spurt of energy, I thought I'd try cutting the plants down to half their height with garden shears, lopping off the whole group like a pruned hedge. Within a couple of weeks every plant was again submerged in a mass of new buds and flowers. They're still going strong now, even after a couple of frosts.'
Worth a try, methinks.

A few weeks back I baggied a few of the 'special' seeds I treat myself to every year. They tend to be seeds which need a little bit of tlc and unusual methods to get them to germinate. Last evening I spotted two seedlings of corydalis nobilis in the 'baggie' and I've potted them up today. My son bought some jicama beans to sow (he must have been infected by my madness ) and as an insurance he gave me some. To get them to produce their 'edible roots' they need a long, hot summer, so I soaked and sowed a few. I have one germinated. The challenge now is to keep them growing until spring!

Well done Tig fingers crossed for you. I sowed some more Sweetpea the other week and they're germinating nicely. Once they've got a couple of leaves, they will join the others on the outside windowledge. I've set aside a few pks of hardy annuals and perennials that can be sown now and I'll get to them over the next couple of weeks.

I will be dong a lot of seeds this year and I started with Gazanias which I did last Saturday (30th) and I saw this morning that they are coming through already. I did have the seeds in the fridge for a couple of weeks which was a trick told to me years ago and it has certainly helped me... Got one little compartment on my heatmat free so will start something else as well..
