I found some viola pods that had opened so I sowed them into a tray of compost.

I have germination in the agastache and prunella pots. I moved them into one of the growhouses and that seemed to be just warm enough to get them growing.

I've sown cal. poppies into the front garden, and some more wallflowers at the side, so of course it cools right down doesn't it.

I had some fresh peony seeds of Ganzu Mudan hybrid tree peonies, 3 different colourways. 15 light pink, 20 darker pink and 10 pink and white. Also 23 seeds of herbaceous peony Lemon Chiffon. The chances are that they will all be different from the parent plants but exciting to see what I eventually get, if it's a 7 year wait for flowers I will be reaching my mid 70s if I last that long.

I made a start with sowing some sweetpea this week. I still have lots more to do. I do find that autumn sown give stronger plants and earlier flowers.

My saved seed sweet peas are up, also spotted that one of the broadleigh lavinia pacific coast iris seeds is showing, it may not flower like the parent but I will be happy with it regardless I have sown two sprinkings of primula candelabra plant world rainbow seeds, one in an oblong trough and the others on top of an empty tall container.

Today I've sown the iris species mixed and mertensia maritima and left the pots outside as they both need to chill to germinate. Sown the dierama strawberry ice cream enough seeds for two pots, the dierama reynoldsii and dierama ripe cherries, all with mpc in the bottom 2/3rds of the pot and seed compost at the top as they will grow on in the pots until spring. I wasn't going to sow much this autumn but I do enjoy having pots to watch for signs of germination in the depths of winter.

All the dieramas have germinated and are growing on well. The yellow pacific coast iris seeds I sowed are germinating (no sign of the purple ones yet though) and somewhat miraculously more of the saved sweet pea seeds have germinated in the big container I transplanted the pots of seedlings into.

What sweet pea varieties do you recommend and where do you get them from? Been a little disappointed in mine for the last couple of years.

I got mine from B&Q this time mickthecactus, verve I think is the name, I had such bad results with Wilkies the last few years, to be honest I think they are all a bit hit and miss, as Ladygardener, says some of hers didn't germinate, I bought some very expensive ones one year and none came up, I was weeks emailing the company before I got another pack of seeds for free off them and they didn't all show either

Last year I saved seeds from the ones I'd grown & they've germinated well. The original seeds last year came from Plant World Seeds, I bought blue danube, charlies angels and prince of orange which were all fragrant varieties. I have always found their seeds reliable.

I have to buy my Sweetpeas from the UK as there are very few varieties here in Germany. I started using Premier Seeds Direct about 3 years ago after being given the tip online - I was very very wary as I know they sell on Ebay and I never buy seeds from Ebay, come what may. www.premierseedsdirect.com/Laugh of all this was that the seeds have been the best I have ever bought - the range good, very reliable - the seeds are what they supposed to be and mostly I have had 100% germination no matter what I have bought. There is also always 10 or 20% discount... Worth a try perhaps mickthecactus..

I buy from various outlets including Sarah Raven, and D.T.Brown etc...but often try to save some of my own as well. I think sometimes it's the variety that gives poor germination rather than the sellers. Cupani and Hi Scent, and Jilly, April in Paris and Incense Mix always do well for me.

My seed order arrived this morning so I filled 8 large pots with mpc in the bottom and seed compost on the top inch, and have sown the Athamanta turbith, Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing',,Cenolophium denudatum, Myrrhis odorata, Peucedanum verticillare, Pimpinella major 'Rosea', Seseli hippomarathrum, Fagopyrum dibotrys - they will all be left outside, just hope we have some cold nights and that the darned blackbirds don't try to pinch the compost. The hydrangea quercifolia & michauxia campanuloides have been sown into pots covered with a plastic bag and will be kept on the front bedroom windowsill. Valeriana officinalis is to be sown in late Feb or March depending on windowsill space

It helps to cover pots with wire mesh so they can't get to it. Other than that I suppose you can start a new thread with pics once they germinate. "Guess what seedling this is." What with the numbers you sow you could have it active way into 2022. Valeriana officinalis is a thing I need not sow as it comes up anywhere. Mostly in my paths. I do love it though.

I am very happy with the germination of the saved seeds from the pacific coast iris - lots of seedlings from the b. lavinia and the pretty yellow one, I hope I get something a bit special from them. Some of the purple have germinated but as those are the most common colour I really don't want too many more, unless they have been cross pollinated with the others, the joy of not knowing what you are going to get is a real bonus for me. Surprising easy with freshly harvested seed, no heat, just left to the weather and do their own thing.

Once they are established they seem to bulk up pretty quickly JasmineLast years seedlings from Broadleigh Rose, which were my first attempt at getting the seeds to germinate, have grown much better than I expected, I think they may throw up at least one flower this year, which will give me some idea of how true to parent they are.
