Having decided what I wanted to plant by the side wall to replace my now defunct Firethorn, I went out and bought a Sarcococca which, if I tend it well to start with, should reward me with beautifully scented winter flowers in a place I walk past daily. ;D
I didn't buy ANYTHING else! (what's wrong with me? I used to be a plantaholic like many of you guys!)

I am glad you posted your message about your new sarcococca as it reminded me that I planted one last year and had completely forgotten about it. I have just realised that it is being choked by an over enthusiastic Hypericum! Just went outside and gave it a hacking - it just keeps coming back. PJ

Took the boys to the GC for lunch. They had a voucher allowing them to cram a pot with daffodils for £1 - that provided quite a lot of entertainment as they tried to squeeze in just one more and just one more! I thought someone might say something at the tills as I don't suppose you are meant to have as many above the top of the pot as you have in it! ;D While they were busy doing that I got some more Spring Dawn daffodils - I bought some last year and they were flowering by mid-January, Bridal Crown daffodils with free Allium Mars bulb, Sailboat (species narcissus) and some Gladiolus Byzantinus. I am also going to order some heritage daffodil bulbs off the internet. I love daffodils! ;D

That's what I think LNG. Although I love summer and the sun I also like autumn because of the mists and the cold nights and blue sky and sunshine the next day and spring when the snowdrops, daffodils and primroses come to life.

I like Autumn too, except at that time of day when darkness is beginning to fall. My spirits fall with it. Once it is dark, I'm fine. LIDL have their bulbs in, they are always good. I bought some bedding Hyacinths. They fill the garden with perfume. Fabulous. Also bought Fritillaria and some Tulips.

I always think I would find winter easier to cope with if it just didn't get dark so early.... Anyway. on with the bulb buying to encourage cheery thoughts of spring!

How right you are WT, I grew tulips last year for the 1st time in pots and was delighted with them.I had them sitting outside the living room window and they made me smile every day. Looking forward to planting twice as many this year. ;D

I can't wait to get started on the planting SO! I put them in pots first of all and then plant them out later when the bulbs that are already in the ground have started to come up and I know where they are! I have ordered some tulips from Crocus after looking for ideas on Sarah Raven's site. She suggested putting Couleur Cardinal, Princess Irene and Havran together so I am going to give that a try. Do you use your tulip bulbs for just one year Wee and LNG or do you get them to come up in following years?

Jasmine I only grew them last year for the first time but in pots not in the flower beds. I had to lift them and store them as I needed the pots. I'll be checking them soon to see if they've survived.(fingers crossed) I have heard mixed reports from folks, some lift and replant and some just leave them, others lift and dispose of them saying the following years blooms are not worth keeping them for. I've bought some new bulbs to plant too as I was so pleased with last years. That sounds like a good idea starting them off in pots then planting them in the ground. Might do that to add some colour to the spring border as most of my spring flowers are grown on the windoledge. ;D

I can't remember where the idea came from, I read it somewhere. It is such a simple idea but saves me putting my spade through bulbs I have already planted! The other thing is there are always gaps when my daffodils come up but the following autumn I can't remember exactly where they are!

Called into Merriments GC today (it is Hurst Green and as well as a GC it has a lovely garden that you can pay to go round) and very nice cakes in its cafe! We didn't go round the garden but we did have cake and I bought some Narcissus Rip Van Winkle bulbs and some Narcissus February Gold bulbs. They had a very good choice of spring bulbs!

I bought some Stocks, just coming into bloom. £1.99 for a tray of 6 so got two trays. Have planted 5 in a large pot and the other 7 will go in a larger pot. Don't know how long they'll last but, now I've got more room on the Patio, I thought I ought to put something in the big pots which have been empty since my last lot of salad leaves ran to seed.
