Thank you LG - it's a very small plant - the GC's round here seem to have lots of little plants like that for about £1.80 at the moment.

I've just bought an alpine penstemon - it has very fine leaves and is called Mersea Yellow. I used to live at West Mersea near Colchester, Essex and the name and colour appealed to me I think I'll keep it in a pot until I see what it looks like

Mersea Yellow looks really pretty and delicate Auricula. I'm just beginning to realise how many different penstemons there are!

Have you put them outside yet MRH? Mine are in their own pots now as well. They are still quite small - tallest one is probably about 5cm. I have to water them quite carefully too otherwise they get flattened! ;D

nope, mine are still indoors...will try and put them in their own pots at the weekend and put them outside in the open mini GH otherwise any rain will flatten them

Oh dear Auricula ... never mind, I have quite a few growing, even though they are only tiny (5cms indeed - imperial Jas 2" is about my best ones! ;D) Mine are in detached residences and have been outside for quite a while, coping nicely, if growing slowly! x Tig

I'm almost afraid to prick them out into single pots as they are so fragile looking

Hmmm....I'm very erratic with seeds

They are tougher than they look Missy, I soaked the pot, tipped the whole lot out and gently teased them apart with as much compost as possible, only a few of them so not a major problem, but I've still ended up with two growing in one pot!
The bigger they get the more tangled the roots will be if they are all together!

I've got a couple of Penstemons in the garden, a bright red called George something or other (I think) Sour Grapes, Blackbird and have some cuttings from them and also the dark burgundy leaved variety with cream flowers. I seem to lose that one every year in the garden so took cuttings last year. Sowed some seeds yesterday of one called True Blue, Mmmm we'll see how they go. Also got a small/low variety that I'll have to check the label of for the name Just remembered I'd got a couple of pics of the Penstomen bed at Barnsdale, there was a sign up saying they liked good drainage and these were in a raised bed area. Thought these looked lovely in these planters tucked in the corner

Is the red one King George V Chuckles? I nearly bought that one yesterday from the green grocers, he had some good specimens in lots of colours for £1.99p each. I picked it up, then put it back (therapy must be working ) Thanks for the photos, made me wish I had relapsed My 'blue' springs' look about the same as yours Jas, there is a photo of them (with other seedlings) on my garden thread x Tig

I'm trying that lots of colours in together look at the bottom of the garden Chuckles - as they really are one plant that rabbits won't touch - hurrayyy! However, our soil is clumpy old clay and they don't seem to mind that either. I love penstemons - they seem to be very forgiving.

These are my 'weedy' ones....I have decided to stick them on the windowsil in the spare room as they are still a bit fragile and think that sticking them outside will kill them off.
