How do I take cuttings from Rosemary? Mine has grown leggy and straggly but has nice new growth on the tips....do I just chop a bit off? and do what with it?

MRH cut below the leaf joint, I've only really taken hard wood cuttings. I take a few of the bottom leaves off and pop into a well draining compost mix. I'm sure someone else will explain it much better than I have but that's what I do and it works some of the time. ;D

I took all the soft green growth from the tops of my rosemary when I pruned it the other week (about 4-5 inch lengths, used my finger to strip the lower leaves off and pushed them about 1.5" into a pot of compost. Don't let the compost dry out while they are rooting, if they wilt they are not getting enough moisture, I stand the pot in a bowl of water in semi-shade. Here they are, still standing upright they may seem congested ( : but I shall split them up once they are anchored by a few roots x Tig

It does look a little odd at the moment - should take a piccie ;D. It looks like a thick pen with 2 tiny little leaves sprouting out the top. Mummy fatsia is looking far glossier and tropical.

I just worry if my freebies die, I feel really guilty then

I just took about 8" off one stalk. It said to make sure it had at least 2 leaves and it has but they are tiny.

The fatsia at school is a bit of a mess after this winter - what would happen if I cut it back a bit - should it make new sprouts or will that finish it off?

Don't know..but I cut mine back and tidied it up and now it is bigger than ever ( about 6' high and 3' wide). It is in good loamy soil in 80% shade - give it a try.....but do it when you're alone so you can deny responsibility if it dies!!! ;D

On Sunday I took a pot full of Penstamon cuttings & yet more Daphnes. I've taken some of the Daphnes with a heel & some without some are in the propagator & some just in a pot being misted every day. I've even got one just in a pot of water on the window sill, surely I must get one or two out of that lot i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif . Jillyx

Fingers crossed for you Jilly. My Verbena cuttings are now already full sized plants, I'm truely amazed. I took some of my Gaura cuttings at the beginning of July as I want to be sure I don't loose what's left of the plant over the winter. Unfortunately not even 1 of the Lithodora cuttings has taken. and I'm not sure about the Penistemen but my fingers are still crossed.

Doesn't putting them in water encourage brittle roots? That's what I read

I nearly always do my cuttings like that Auricula and the new little plants seem healthy enough.
