Hope it grows for you Jilly, honeysuckle is wonderful. I will get on some day, heavily scented one which does'nt take over is what I need. My Salvia Queen Victoria wilted and died, far too wet.

A couple of weeks ago I bought 2 new Penstomens, Sour Grapes. They both had lots of new growth on so last Tuesday I snipped some off, I trimmed the bottom leaves off leaving 2 or 3 leaves on roughly a 2-3" stem. Followed Geranium or Auriculas method of rooting them in water, (sorry can't remember who) Well ;D I now have cuttings that need potting on. Glass of water and a bit of bottom heat from the HP and bingo I've done this method of rooting before with plants for hanging baskets mainly Nepeta, Bidens, and Verbena but I'd never have thought of Penstemons though. These are some pics from 2008 14 days since I did the Bidens cutting and they now have really good roots on them. Potted them up this morning 5 days on and some good roots showing

I still have NEVER managed to get even one single cutting to root in water but I have taken lots more in perlite/compost mainly penstemons, fuchsias, phloxes, gauras, osteospernums and sun roses. The greenhouse is nearly full already

Tis I that roots cuttings in water! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif I have a row of jam jars with Penstemon cuttings in, and most are rooting well. I'm trying Hebe cuttings (from the one that had to come out) in a compost/vermiculite mix, and Erysimums in pure vermiculite as an experimant. I also have Helianthemums and Salvias in.

I've got several cuttings on the go as well, the Penstemon are in water, the others in either compost or compost and vermiculite mixed. Pelagonium, lavender and as Jilly says she does it I thought I'd give Verbena Boneriensis a go.

My Heavenly blue cuttings all gave up the ghost, my fault, I took them from the damaged side of the plant, because I was pruning that bit back anyway. They were a bit manky looking.
I'll try again from the good side.

Why can't I get them to root in water??? Is there something secret you all do??? Carol Klein ( Queen of propagation) never mentions water

They don't root very quickly in water for me Auricula, and I keep them on the kitchen window sill which is North facing - although I did get the Huskers Red quite quickly (good job you had a cutting cos I think 'mummy' might have died!) and I've potted on three other bits with roots this week, gawd knows how long they'd been soaking though!
Never thought to try phlox, do they root in water? ;D

Thanks Tig. OH would have a fit if I had anything indoors Phlox root easily in compost but I don't know about water. Don't gaura root quickly - a matter of days ;D

My OH says exactly the same Geranium - and moves things to the greenhouse if he thinks they should not be where they are I wanted to overwinter just one plant in the conservatory last year....but it didn't even last there 24hrs before it was back in the greenhouse, so, no chance for jam jars of watery cuttings

That's where I'm luck I think, my OH just thinks me turning the house into a greenhouse is hilarious & just builds me more shelves i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif . I think the only reason I'm more successful with cuttings in water than in compost is that if they're on the kitchen windowsill they're under my eye all the time. Jillyx

My OH knows better than to comment or face an arguement about his tools, gadgets, radios, boxes (he saves the boxes from all his purchases for years, just in case they have to be sent back : , and if he does pull a face, I can pull a better one I shall do the fuchsias tomorrow, and try a couple of phlox x Tig

I was trying some Cotinus Grace cuttings in compost and they've all gone mouldy on me. Cotinus are one of the very few shrubs that won't root from cuttings. Try layering instead.

He has Jilly! Occassionally he has a clear out in the loft and it's all empty boxes from years ago (glad I have a 'friend' with a similarly weird OH ) I've nipped a few bits of fuchsias off this morning, why can you never find decent side shoots when you decide to do it??? Nearly every one had flower buds on them x Tig

I had that problem with the Gaura the bride which I originally grew from Jasmine's seeds. I've gone ahead and taken the flower shoot out of it and made it into 3 cuttings. We'll see what happens.

What colour is it, Amber? I didn't know you could strike cuttings of Streptos in water. I'll have to try that! We'll all be green with envy when you're off on your jaunts again. Two in one year? Most unfair. I want one! They are easy in water Geranium....even bits of leaves will root......the trailing one is Streptocarpus Exorum...a pretty pale lavender.....I'm sure when these cuttings have settled down I could send you one PS: I'll think of you all while sunbathing beside the pool
