I've quite a few gardening books gathered over time too. Mostly bought for me by my sister who frequently gets to car boot sales. The gardening handbook by Peter McHoy, it's a good little book with lots of pictures to explain whats happening. Also have The essential small garden by Peter McHoy. RHS Vegetables in a small garden. another great book The complete vegetable Gardener Readers Digest, this one I've bookmarked like Amo with little flags. Small garden by John Brookes it's more of a design book really but has some ideas you can copy. Good reads for a winter's day ;D

The lure of the book section in the charity shop got me again ;D I couldn't resist David Squires book, Pruning - a practical guide to achieving the best results from every plant. It has been a good read over the past couple of wet days, and should provide an excellent reference resource x Tig

I won a book in a gardening competition recently: a signed copy of The Morville Hours: The Story of a Garden, by Katherine Swift. It's was on the Radio 4 Book of the Week list and I wonder if anyone else has read it?

Bought a book for my neighbour last week for her birthday The Veg & Herb Expert - Dr Hessayon it's one that I have and all his books are nice and straight forward imo, she loves it I got scouting around the charity shops looking for interesting books while I was in town, found nothing. When I got home I did a bit of surfing and found that Oxfam sell online. Came across these two rather curious old books, was tempted to order them but managed to contain myself ;D The gardeners' book52 Week-end Jobs in My Garden

That's an interesting looking book Chuckles. I like being able to look inside. I've made a few mistakes on Amazon, with work related books not gardening, just because you can only go on the write up until you can actually open the book.

Hessayon. It was in a pretty poor state but looked interesting. I desisted and then found a hardcover copy on Amazon for a penny and postage £2.75. It arrived this morning and in very good nick. It says in the dust jacket "you will discover gardens you may never see, plants you may never grow and people you may never meet." A good book to dip into when it's too cold and wet to garden.

The RHS Illustrated Dictionary of Gardening - the current issue, pristine ... mine for £3 (Amazon price £25.50p!) I've bought a few more books over the past few months and have all the Dr Hessayons apart from the one you bought your friend Chuckles .... can I be your friend? ;D x Tig

I like the Hessayon books - I bought Alan T's one similar to the Hessayon ones, it was perennials....and it was rubbish by comparison, so I'll stick with Dr Dave ;D

Shame about Alans book Auricula Personally I think the Dr Hessayon books are great value, they are easy to read and give such straight forward advice. You can be my friend Tig, I'll start saving up for a copy of the veggie book for you ;D

I had forgotten this thread - not getting emails about it for some reason - maybe if I post on it again ... I have a lot of the Hessayon books, but I like the Which? ones better - they're very similar, but rather more up-to-date (especially when it comes to things like organic gardening, which I don't think Hessayon has heard of : - there are only a few of them though. If I had remembered this thread back in May I'd have posted this here: theclockworkdodo.blogspot.com/2010/05/addiction.html ;D

I admit to being a fan of the RHS books - I can happily sit and read them, especially the 'Perennials' one. I keep the A-Z next to me, too. Very useful!

Did anyone get any good gardening related books for Christmas? I got Hedge Man by John Cushnie from Secret Santa at work - can't wait to start reading it.

I didn't get any Jas but that sounds like a good read This is a wonderful collection of the much loved John Cushnie's best writing for the "Daily Telegraph"'s "Gardening" supplement. It is journalism at its best, in which he achieved the perfect balance of horticulture and humour, good sense and fun. Cushnie was the master of the one liner, and pulls his readers into his articles with vigorous, fast-moving prose that is a joy to read. More than any other gardening writer today, Cushnie brings his subject alive - whether the finer points of garden design, the intricacies of planting up a rock garden, or the romance of growing climbers up a tree. He was highly opinionated, often contrary, always off-beat, but dispensed sound horticultural tips and advice with warmth and humour. When asked by Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 to comment on hedges, John Cushnie answered: 'I love yew'. This mischievous response was typical of Cushnie - funny, quick witted and irreverent - and resulted in Evans nicknaming him 'The Hedge Man'.
