I was reading Carol Klein's new book - Life in a cottage garden - at the w/e and I've got to the bit about her Cercis which she grew from seeds that her Mum picked up off the pavement in Portugal. On Tuesday I had to park in the road as I was late to school and I got out and found little brown pods all over the pavement. I had parked right by a Cercis in someone's front garden. It was a small neat little tree with the flowers just going over and green heart shaped leaves appearing. I have no idea which Cercis it is but I'm going to have a go at growing the seeds - there's plenty if anyone else would like to try too.

I've just received 'Gardening Secrets from National Trust Head Gardeners' from Amazon. It had good reviews. It'll be bedtime reading for a few nights - it's only a little book!
I also ordered Seeds recently after Geranium was talking about it. I thought it would be useful to know what to do with all the seeds I collect/receive/fall in my bag on the way past! ;D

The NT Head Gardener book is interesting. Each Head Gardener has written a section on their area of speciality - bedding plants, trees for small spaces etc... and there's tips for each section.

Got a 1p book off Amazon after it was recommended in the paper - Rosemary Verey's Good Planting. It suggests good planting combinations - I've only had a flick through so far but it looks interesting.

I'm on my second go Jen after reading in Jekka's seed book that they should be sown in autumn and should take 3 to 4 weeks to germinate. I gave up with the first lot It must be nearly 3 weeks since I sowed them and I checked when I got home this evening but there's nothing showing yet.

Sounds like you got a little bargain with that 1p book Jasmine. Don't forget to post on the tips thread if you come across anything relevant.

I thought I recognised the title Jasmine, I've just had a look at my shelf of gardening books (it's awful, since the Internet I hardly look at a reference book any more) & I've got the Rosemary Verey book too. Gorgeous pictures. I had a bit of a look at some of my old favourites & if you can get them that cheaply on Amazon I would recommend Cottages Gardens by Christopher Lloyd along with someone else or any of the old Geoff Hamilton ones, especially Cottages Gardens or Paradise Places (think that's what it's called i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif ) Jillyx

I'll have a look Jilly - thanks for the tips! It's amazing that they bother selling books for 1p + what looks like a standard £2.80 postage.
I have a feeling too that Rosemary Verey is an aunt of a friend of mine but I can't remember if I've remembered the right Telegraph garden columnist's name! I must ask!

Has anyone got any gardening books on their Christmas list. I like the look of SR's new book on Wild Flowers but £50 is ridiculous Amazon are doing it for £28 but I'm just wondering if the fantastic photography is worth that I read an article recently on someone's top 10 gardening books and she said that The Revolting Garden by Germaine Greer (writing as Rose Blight in The Guardian) was a good read but it has been out of print for years and is going for about £90'ish on lots of second hand book sites. If anyone has it - is it good?....and you're sitting on a little goldmine by the looks of things! ;D

I bought a little cheap and cheerful latin plant names and their pronunciation book from Amazon this week. Interestingly although CK calls gaura gow-ra it says you should say it gaw-ra to rhyme with Laura.
