I got Helen Dillon's Garden from OH for Christmas. She writes well and is quite funny and to the point! Did anyone else get any gardening books?

I think I have AT's Garden Year Jen. It's split up with what to do each month and focuses on all aspects of the garden so isn't limited if you don't grow veggies etc... I'll have to check - I think that's what I've got! I've not heard of Jane Courtier either - does the book look good?

Not really but inside it is split into quite a few sections ie Early Spring, Mid Spring, Late Spring etc rather than just SPRING

I'm still trying to decide about SR's new wild flower book. The pictures (not taken by her) are supposed to be stunning.

Now that sounds interesting....does it give pronounciations as well It just defines what the most common latin words used in plant naming conventions mean in laymans terms, and has a few interesting horticultural facts and fables - think it is a good addition to my gardening reference library x Tig

Got a book from OH instead of an Easter egg - it's called Painterly Plants and it covers the history of 14 different plants such as daffodils, roses, auriculas, tulips etc... and the photography is amazing.

I'm reading Carol Klein's Favourite Plants at the moment. If anyone is looking for a Christmas pressie I can thoroughly recommend it! It is divided into chapters on different plants under headings such as Will-o'-the wisps and wafty whisperers, Cinderella plants and Drama queens... The pictures are gorgeous too - they are by Jonathan Buckley - he gets about a bit in gardening books!
I picked these 2 bits out while I was reading this afternoon...
'Pollination of some species peonies results in the formation of exciting fat seed pods which burst asunder to reveal, in the case of Paeonia mlokosewitschii, plump, orange seeds lying in canoes lined with red velvet.'
Just makes to want to have one in your garden!
Then this...
'In full flower and seed Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Herbstzauber' (Autumn Magic) is a hilarious plant. It massed heads waving upwards, each densely covered in fine hair, look like crowds of furry caterpillars which have climbed to the top of a blade of grass and are wondering where to go next.'
Which made me laugh!
