Thanks for the nom Jilly - and I do love your Mums way of thinking What a much nicer way to perpetuate the offering to loved ones than to save the for posterity! And whoever is responsible, you parents must be very proud of their lovely garden, no wonder you are such an enthusiast TT - that flower is a miniature Iris Reticulata. They grow about 6" tall (mine are a little bigger this year - think someone forgot to tell them ;D) I started out with ten bulbs planted in October 2008 and they have all doubled up this year. They are actually a deeper blue than the photo, but I can't seem to capture the colour exactly for some reason! x Tig

Thanks Tig; so it is an iris. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Would be nice if it can handle some shade but I rather doubt it can, being an iris. I have an area that gets quite a bit of shade that I would like to brighten up some more in the spring. I've got the usual shady suspects there - hostas and primula, and ligularia in the summer. I've been working in some penestemon but they haven't been a resounding success so far; slugs seem to favour them. I put in a couple of heuchera and a brunnera last year so I'm hoping they do OK this coming season. But I like that iris so I'll keep an eye.

Jilly, your Parents garden is a wonderful burst of spring colour. I love the look of those 2 bird baths. Are they wooden or stone?

Did I say I've been working in some penestemons in the shade area? I ment to say pulmonarias, and the slugs that hang out in my garden love them, unfortunately. BTW Anyone had good success with penestemons in shade? About 3 hours at most of afternoon sun.

Think penstemons are sun lovers TT The Brunnera Jack Frost which I have grows well in shade, has huge leaves and pretty little blue flowers, seems tough as old boots as well. Dicentra spectabilis also does well for me in shade, plenty of flowers and copes with the cold weather. Here is a flower on my new camellia, Brushfields Yellow (it may never flower again ) And the contorted hazel is covered in catkins, they were wafting beautifully in the breeze today ... x Tig

TT, I have one growing in part sun/part shade (actually mostly shade and a little bit of sun i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cheesy.gif ) and it does ok it just doesn't get quite as full and bushy as the ones that are in sunshine for most of the day. In our old garden I grew one under an apple tree so it was in constant dappled sunshine and it did ok too. I think that's all you could say though - they both did ok - rather than they both did fantastically.

Most of my penstemons are in shade TT They all flower well but i have never grown them in a sunny boarder because i dont have that luxery in my garden. My boarders are north facing so only get a little sun first thing in the morning. I always take cuttings in the autumn though just in case i loose any.

They're lovely pics RF, isn't it amazing that we were all posting Spring flowers when you were still covered in snow & now your Crocuses are out already. Love the bottom one with the bees, I expect they were desperate for some flowers to come out after the big freeze. The sunshine last week has brought out my Iris Reticulatas & the baby Daffs. Jillyx
