OK, I now have major problems - I have three more songs which absolutely HAVE to be in my top 10! So, um, as Slugger has suggested we go up to 20 & no-one has objected I've put them all equal ninth 9= The Rock, The Alarm: couldn't find this on youtube, so here's one of their other songs (don't be misled by the intro, it gets much rockier!): 9= Reap The Wild Wind, Ultravox: 9= Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music (noooo, not the awful cheesy Cliff Richard cover; the original is way better!), Larry Norman, from the album Only Visiting This Planet: unfortunately there aren't any decent versions of this on youtube, so I googled and found a slightly better one here - it's not a great recording, but you get the idea: www.godtube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=3507b09fb7d4216b75a9All very nostalgic - the Ultravox Quartet album was one of the first albums I ever bought, I think; The Alarm reminds me of holidays when I was a student - lots of people in my church at home were into them and I had a couple of great summer holidays in Devon with about 50 other people from the youth group, so it really takes me back (so do those mullets on the video!); and I first discovered Larry Norman when I was a student too. If you're thinking "Larry who?" he's an American singer-songwriter - he wrote lots of left-wing protest songs (about the same time as Bob Dylan) about war, racism, vietnam etc ... was quite well known in the music business in the 60s & 70s, opened for bands like the Grateful Dead and the Doors ... all of which made him kind of unpopular with the American right & got his music banned from being sold in Bible bookshops over there, despite his really Christian lyrics ... (hence the line "or even communistic" in the live version of Why Should The Devil ... - it isn't in the original version of the song - it's a response to things people said about him). Anyway, does that mean I get three puddings?! I think I'll have a chunk of Carrot Cake on the Isle of Anglesey with the Alarm, and then some fresh fruit salad on the Isle of Wight with the Ultravox, and finally some pecan pie and a trip to Jersey for the Larry Norman ... Oh and Slugger - I already said this would be in my list, so here it is too: 12. Strange Glue, Catatonia: Unlike Plocket, I'll never say no to pudding - might just squeeze in a slice of melon and I'll have to go back to Wales, won't I? - Skomer Island sounds nice ...

The next disc would be the classic 1970's Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle".
Why? Because the song is a parody of me and my beloved Father and if I hadn't moved out of London would have inevitably been the story with my own son.

You've got another one from my list in there, FA Cheery - is this spot the odd one out? 'Cos I think it's Elaine Paige Next one from me ... 13. I was actually a little young for the Sex Pistols when they first came out but I remember all the controversy and the scandal when kids at school "turned" punk. I also remember how the charts and music generally were never the same after the Pistols exploded onto the scene and the utterly brilliant tv interview with Bill Grundy that caused national outrage !!
It was only after they'd split up and John Lydon had gone on to form PiL that I actually began to appreciate the music.

Ok I'm going to possibly embarrass myself here - I've never particularly been a fan of Take That, possibly due to my age, but I really like Shine - so that will be next on my list. Dessert - if I haven't said it already I'll have home-made Bakewell Tart with cream please. I can't think of an island

Loved hearing the Walker Bros version of "No Regrets" - a great song. I have it by Tom Rush, also good version.
Scott Walker has made a comeback recently, although apparently he never went away really. I think he has been living over here.

Tig - I love that REM song, didn't quite make it to my list but I enjoyed listening to it again ;D My next choice has got to be Abba, but choosing one Abba song is a bit like choosing one Beatles song ... there are so many good ones ... in fact they are so talented & made enough fabulous glam rock songs and stunning ballads I can even forgive them the odd I Have A Dream! Knowing Me, Knowing You is one of my favourites, but no-one can take that seriously any more after Alan Partridge Here are a couple of other slightly less well known ones which I really like: On And On And On: Hole In Your Soul: and here's the one I've chosen (for today, anyway): 14. Summer Night City, Abba: Because I've loved Abba since I first heard Waterloo on the Eurovision, when I was all of 8, & I've loved them ever since, even when I was a few years older & started listening to trendier (at that time) music like Ultravox & Japan. And because even though I'm becoming more of a peace-&-quiet-in-the-country person as I get older, I was born & bred a city girl. Mint choc chip Corneto, somewhere hotter than my usual choice of islands ... maybe Crete ...

We may be born in a certain era but we like cetain up to date music or younger generations likeing older older music very interesting. I think it's really interesting too, Snowowl - not just the variation but also the amount of overlap of our tastes. I'm sad the thread has slipped down without any postings for a while though - am I the only one still wanting music & pudding? Where's Slugger? - he said make it top 20 & then he disappeared 15. I've Been Losing You, A-Ha: Because A-Ha were the soundtrack for much of my youth and, as they're still going strong & they're one of the few bands that R & I both like, they've been the soundtrack to much of my adult life too. And also Morten Harket ... Raspberry pavlova on the Lofoten islands (this thread is improving my geography too )

Sorry Juliet, I'm still here but in lurking mode at the moment - been on holiday for a week (i.e. not at work, therefore not so much time in front of a pc ) Also got the lurgy too. Anyway, yes, to my top 20. Next addition is from All About Eve. Remeber them? Folky/rocky/poppy band but with a fine voice and heavy guitar sound. My kids loved 'em too - first proper concert they ever went to. But which track though? Has to be between Wild Hearted Woman and Every Angel. Hmmmm. Think I'll plump for the latter. So dessert has to be Angel Delight, floating on a cloud somewhere (does that count as an island?)

Glad I'm not the only one still enjoying the thread ;D (Hi Slugger! I missed you - sorry you've got the lurgy - hope you had a good holiday despite it! Did you see R's feedback re the Radiohead on the What are you Listening to Now thread?) Next one from me: 16. Once In A Lifetime, Talking Heads - we've already had the video of this from FA so here's the live version: I'm not sure I would choose Talking Heads if I was selecting my top 20 bands, or choose this song if I were picking my favourite 20 songs, but I saw the film Stop Making Sense several times when I was a student & loved it, so I had to have one of their songs just because of the significance - it kind of defines an era for me. There used to be a restaurant in Cambridge called Waffles which only served ... (wait for it!) waffles - with all sorts of different savoury and sweet toppings. It's gone now But as this is a nostalgic selection for me I'll have a virtual waffle topped with blackcurrants & whipped cream, which was my favourite thing from their menu. Island - dunno, I'm running out - um, I haven't had Sark yet, have I?
