Boy am I enjoying this! OK, now for my numbers 2 & 3. I promise I will move out of the 70s eventually, but these two are my real fave “Pomp Rock” tracks, and though many of you will have never heard them (or maybe even of them), Yes and Van der Graaf Generator (along with Pink Floyd and early Genesis – more of them later probably) were experts at crafting lyrics and music into masterpieces of symphonic proportion. Not really pompous at all, just great musicianship, great songs, great arrangements and a large dash of collective genius that still sounds good today. The tracks? “And you And I” off Yes’s “Close to the Edge” album, and VdGG’s “La Rossa” off “Still Life”. Check them out if you get the chance, but give yourself plenty of time! And as for my favourite Island? Well that would have to be one of the Island record label sampler discs from the early 70s, with such bands as Mott The Hoople, Traffic, Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig, Spooky Tooth, Nirvana (the original, not Kurt Cobain’s outfit – more of them later too!), Nick Drake and many many others. And for pud? – Strawberry Scones and a pot of Yorkshire Tea!

Well he wrote good music And just so's you know, I have heard of The Kinks - I just didn't know they did the original Days song. And erm..... we used a Van der Graff Generator at school - if I remember rightly touching it would make your hair stand on end ;D Crumbs I hope my No.8 doesn't upset anyone

sorry forgot to say why
Ive liked it forever but a few years ago I took OH to see her live. It was a small auditorium only held 300 and alot of the time she was in with the audiance, the only backing was a trio piano, double bass and drums. What a voice.

I'm struggling with my No.8 song, basically because I can't possibly choose a favorite Freddie Mercury song. So I'm going to club two together as 8 and 7: Let's Turn it on - I've chosen this one because it's just so funky - I love dancing around the house to this one, or cooking, and singing at the top of my voice. It's fab! Barcelona - sung by Freddie and the gorgeous Montserrat Caballe - this song is just awesome and gives me goosebumps. Two fantastic voices combined to sing an incredibly passionate song. I really must get to Barcelona one day Island - well I'm going to choose Mallorca. We used to go to the island in the early 70's when dad did a lot of work in Spain. I remember it as a building site and it was a fantastic place to have a holiday - as a kid!!! And that leads on to my dessert - well not strictly a dessert more a sweet breakfast bun, but emsamadas (sp?) are WONDERFUL!

My next choice is Days by Kirsty McColl. I love most of her music Great choice Plocket. I haven't managed to get a Kirsty McColl track into my top 10 but there were several under consideration. She had an absolutely fantastic voice and it was such a shame she died in such tragic circumstances at a relatively young age. FA x

She shared the same birthday as me, but was a few years older. I can't believe they still haven't worked out what happened when she died It's nice to know that there are still fans out there though - it means her music isn't forgotten.

OH is a Joy Division fan so I know it quite well. There's another sad story - I mean Curtis commiting suicide. What it is with pop singers hey?

Ok, number 9 on my countdown is probably the one I'm most embarassed about. I would never admit this to my mates but it's..... Strawberry Switchblade - "Since Yesterday" I know it's cheesy 80's pop but I was madly in love with the 2 girls in the band and even after 20-odd years I still love the quirkiness of this song. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x7QPBzAJ_ioFA x PS - I promise I'll get back to proper songs on my next choice ;D

FA, good choice on the Strawberry Switchblade track. Classic mid-80s production and video to boot! Shades of Claire Grogan in the vocal department. I have a similar thing wth Siobhan Fahey in the 'Stay' video. Not particular favourite, but she rocks in this vid (she's the mental llooking one that used to be in Bananarama);
Anyway, I digress. Good thread Cap'n. So to kick off, at No. 10. In like a bullet is It Bites and Once Around The World. It Bites were a vastly under-rated band in the 80s best known for their cheesy pop hit Calling All The Heroes, but they were much, much more than pin up boys and this track encapsulates everything they were about. Great musicianship from all concerned, particularly guitar God Francis Dunnery, and one song I shall never ever grow tired of hearing. Short video for anoraks follows (check it out);
Favourite island; Sicily
Favourite Dessert; Muller Light (Mandarin or Cherry)

It's difficult to plump on just 10 isn't it?...
Number 2 : Jethro Tull 'Skating Away on the thin Ice of a New Day'...I could've chosen dozens of others..I love JT...but the above track always lifts my spirits. ;D
Dessert No.2...a big bowl of fresh sweet strawberries.

And in it at No. 9 on DG's list is a brilliant country song by Tim McGraw called Please Remember Me - one of the most beautiful, poignant songs I think ever written; uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mHM02zhuipo

Apologies in advance for hogging but I'm on a roll. At No.8 is (and I'm cheating a bit here, but...) the soundtrack for the movie Gladiator. This was my proper 'date' movie with my wife and our son turned up a year or so later and I constantly find myself crying at this movie, particularly the closing scenes...and I'm not ashamed to say it. The music is just wonderful, and stands on it's own right separate of the film; uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sfo-duncELI

Well I started but now I've thought about it - there is no way I can manage a top 10, once I started down memory lane (and I will be there for a long time whilst on u tube) just can't narrow it down to 10, lots of memories good and bad so I'm going to keep most of them all to my self My all time favourite is Land Slide by Stevie Nicks and this is my favourite version - brilliant.

OK Pop Pickers....A surprise re-entry in at No9 is the Russian composer Serge Prokovief with his "Lieutenant Kije Suite" - Wonder if they have 4 years interest free credit on this suite at DFS? ;D
I could have named a couple of dozen classical composers....but this particular one has had influence on two of our influential songwriters in recent times both with No1's to their name.
Firstly Greg Lake (of Emmerson, Lake & Palmer) with the 2nd best Christmas song of all time "I Believe in Father Christmas".....
Secondly, that complete utter git Sting and his song "Russians".....
So basically I get 3 tracks for one on my Dessert Island....
......Beguia (pro. Beckway) in the Grenadines.
Dessert - A tart! Not fussy anyone of them will do ;D

Aww Cap'n, great choice. Sorry to do this but I'm going in with DG's No.7. Hooked on Classics? We certainly are, so pop some shag in your pipe and check out the sounds of comrade Tchaikovsky's 1st movement of his 6th Symphony. Poptabulous! Anyone for lemon sorbet? PS Jlottie - Landslide - TUNE! Love that song
