Some of each Tig, some new some lifted, I aint brave enough to pour boiling water Amber, even though I hear that's how to get perfect parsley, but that's another story, I've got a couple in wet compost in pots and I'll see how they do.

Some of mine have only a couple of leaves, they don't seem to be putting on speedy growth this year

Hm if there are roots would you not damage those with boiling water? I think shock treatment is for tubers doing nothing at all.
Mine are constantly attacked by the S&S and I ended up putting cloches over them There is growth now but still they are nibbled to bits. I was trying to go pellet free this year but it simply is not the time for it as this year there are sooooooooo many S's
Maybe try to put a cloche over one of them and see if that makes a difference. Do be careful with sunshine though as things then heat up too much.

Amber I have a couple that are doing nothing at all and will try the boiling water on them to see if anything happens and report back. Others are doing really really well and some are just through the soil, it's funny how different they all are. Dutchy the S&S make a b line for mine as well at the allotment and I put down blue pellets too I'm afraid. If I did'nt then I could'nt grow anything at all.

maggy, Thanks, there are just a few of mine flowering, the rest all just have leaves, some with buds but it'll be a while before they're ready to flower. Unfortunately, with all the rain, the slugs are out in force and they're having a right old party.

My signs of growth have been nibbled off again... One has outgrown the S&S but the others.... Yet where there is life there is hope. Either I get very late Dahlia or Late Dahlia....

That lemon one is very lovely Ladygardener, it looks huge compared to your hand. I think we grow very much the same variety of plants LG & it always seems that you're around a week or so ahead of me, my Dahlias are all growing well & I've got big fat buds on most, think they'll probably start to come out sometime this week.

I've a few blooming Dutchy Jilly and a lot being eaten by slugs rather than snails. Jilly we do grow a lot of similar plants / flowers you and I, some of mine are earlier flowering than yours but then some of yours are a few weeks earlier than mine. Swings and roundabouts is'nt it. I think we both have very good taste.

My Arabian night has survived and has now flowered. Good thing this one did as I love the dark velvety flowers. I bought a big nameless one at a fair and now it looks as if the white one might just make it too. Two survivors, one new one. I think I will enjoy Dahlia flowers after all. I'd try slug pellets too Wendya but it does not automatically mean your Dahlia will rot. Leave it be it might still get some more leaves and may give a good tuber after all.

As you know if it not Rosa then the chances are I know little or nothing about it, so need your help please! I seem to remember that when I planted my "rescue" half price dahlia there were two or three shriveled up tubers to each plant. What I have just lifted bear very little resemblance to those original plants. There are many 5 6 7 plump tubers. I understand they will shrivel over Winter but will each produce a flowering plant? If several start to throw shoots in Spring can I separate them (treat them as cuttings) and pot on each as an independent plant?

Perhaps someone else can advise fozzie but in the past I've taken successful Dahlia cuttings from new growth of tubers started off in end of Jan or Feb under glass. Easy enough to take they say but I've had some failures as well and I think that was partly because I let the growth get too big before using it as a cutting. This link should explain better than me and also includes advice on splitting tubers. As to each "finger" getting a growing point then no they don't they must have what is called an Eye attached. Sometimes I can't see the eyes but have planted odd bits of tubers successfully. www.gardenseeker.com/propagation/taking-cuttings-of-dahlias.html

No problem fozzie, glad you got something from it. Do keep us informed and tell me how you wash your Dahlia? Do you dunk them into water and let them dry out? I just turn mine upside down after cutting back and let them dry out and poke as much soil and anything else I can see out of them before wrapping in newspaper for a couple of months.

Wash them? I never do as the bits of remaining soil help get them through Winter. I do like LG does. It works well. Safes on good water too...
