Is anyone able to help with half an ID please? Not the left hand plant - that's my rescued Lavender Little Lady looking much better for a good drink. Every nook and cranny in Heathfield is covered in the grass on the right. I am hoping I'm right and it's a form of Briza that's self-seeded all over the place. It's interesting as I then read that it doesn't like root disturbance and I just pulled a few clumps out of very dry ground! Is there a way of knowing if it is Briza Maxima or Briza Media? I love the way the seed heads bob in the breeze! If anyone wants some seed in a bit let me know! Looks familiar Jasmine but not a clue on what it is, sorry

Briza maxima, Jasmine. I have it growing along the path edge. Once you've got it, you've got it!

Thank you Geranium - do you happen to know what the difference between Briza Media and Briza Maxima is?

Maxima probably means it spreads to the maximum Jas.

I guess one is bigger than the other but if you've only got 1 it's hard to tell what you've got!

The seed heads on B. maxima are bigger than B. media, Jasmine, and it's an annual, while B. media is a perennial. I suppose you'd see the difference more clearly if the two plants were growing side by side.

You're welcome, Jasmine - it'll be interesting for me to find out if two clumps of B. maxima that I dug up for friends last year 'took', and seeded themselves... I must ask them.

On 22nd April this year I asked if anyone could identify a rogue seedling that had grown with my cosmos. RF suggested it looked a bit 'nettle'ish but not the stinging variety. I think she was right as it has just flowered. It only has two at a time though, but deffo looks like some kind of lamium!

It was this google image of lamium purpureum flowers (although mine has pure green leaves) that made me think it was the same species owdboggy

I think it's been around for a while RF - it was on the RHS website as Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea 'Fontäne' Aahh - that's makes sense to me now - I found a label with "linia arundin" on it - the rest was torn off!! A wonderful grass and the "sister" that I bought today "Heidebraut" is a little beauty - just right for the tub that I have...the "Fontaene" would have been too big I think... RF

Not well up on grasses. Leaves are a bit broad for any of the Festuca tribe. Leymus condensatus is a possibility. Or Leymus arenarius. they are both broader leafed blue grasses.

Yes thanks OB, they look similar - I was looking at the Festuca and saw none that had broader leaves... If it is the arenarius then I shall have to leave it in a tub as it wanders around - the condensastus does as well a bit...mmmhhh - plus I am not sure about being hardy for us. It's a nice colour though.. RF

I'm guessing these are little bulbils and could at some stage be detached and planted to grow one day in a few years time into lilies?

Yes, treat them like seeds ,sow now and they start growing in Spring. Take about 3 years to reach flowering size.
