Oh, Auricula - I do hope you didn't get it indoors - it's not nice at all! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/shocked.gif Yes, I'm afraid we got more water indoors last night. We'd been watching the stream rising all evening, and as it was still raining when we went to bed, we kind of knew that it would flood again. I woke at 1.30 and the house was surrounded again, and the water was just creeping in to the garden room. I did manage to go back to sleep in spite of the wind howling round, but I woke again at 5.45, and the hall and dining room carpets are soggier near the front door, and the garden room floor is silty again. Not nearly as bad as the first little 'episode', thank goodness. Unfortunately, today is just a respite - there's another big one on the way to hit the SW either tonight or tomorrow.

To be honest, Tt, I wouldn't have left the house. Upstairs is fine...and I'd rather be here to cope with things. Hallelujah - no floods last night! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif The stream level rose again, but the last weather system passed over more to the north of here so it didn't reach the house. Part of the garden was covered, that's all. I watched the news and saw the devastation - poor things! Today we'll start the clear-up, and call in the offers of help. I noticed that the paint on the walls is blistering, so there will eventually be decorating to be done.

Such a relief I heard on the news that it had passed you by, somewhat. The hard work now begins, and you must not do too much...take care

Ditto that and indeed do take care not to overdo things, you have only one body and spare parts are extremely hard to get.

I worry about you and your OH everytime I hear the west country on the news so glad it was further north than your house, the carerer has just come and said the road up from our house has lots of water coming down it but thankfully we are OK for now, the water board have opened the flood gates on the higher res up from us so we have a large amount of water coming down past and under the bridge but not as much as a few months ago, we have 6 res'es in a line and we are between the first and second ones and everyone has been 100% since before the start of June so not sure where they are sending it all. Keep smiling Geranium all our thoughts are with you. Hope Auricula is safe further down the pointy end.

I think I'd feel the same Geranium, rather be there and feel I had some control of the situation, rather than away and worrying even more about what might be going on.
Let's hope for some fine, dry weather now so that you can get as much sorted out so as possible and make a plan of action for what will have to be left to dry out.
I'm sure both you and your OH will be sensible and not over-stretch yourselves, glad you have help at hand, like others I wish we were close enough to come along and muck in.

Thank you - I do too! Did I tell you that EdF had offered help? I wrote down the phone number, and as we'd decided that the dining room carpet had to go, OH phoned them, and was told that someone would come in the afternoon. We spent the morning emptying the dresser, cupboards, picking things up, shifting glass and china upstairs - you name it. I was just emptying the bookcase at 1 o'clock, when three hefty men all in hi-vis and boots arrived. They were wonderful. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif They shifted heavy furniture around with the greatest of ease, ripped up the sodden carpet and underlay, rolled it up, shifted things back to get to the other half of the room and eventually had a huge and v.v.v. heavy roll. They whistled up reinforcements and three more large men appeared from nowhere! In two shakes of a lamb's tail, the carpet was out and round on the cobbled area at the back of the house. Oh, and they lifted the piano off its blocks, too. Magic! All achieved in less than an hour! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cheesy.gif Apparently, because the permission to start building the new Power Station hasn't yet been granted, the work force are standing idle, so the Site Director sent them out to be useful in the community. They've been unblocking drains, pumping out houses, and generally being helpful! They will come back as and when we need more help. I shall write and thank the Site Director after all this is over. So - we have a house of chaos, but OH spent the afternoon getting our phone and broadband back. (Seriously, it's a lifeline - we couldn't be cut off from everything and everyone.)

I expect both you and OH felt a great sense of relief to get rid of the sodden carpet, it would have made the whole house smell musty! Hopefully it will help dry it out a bit quicker now it's been removed. It was a Godsend indeed that those chaps were idle ;D Onward and upward eh? Are your insurers on the case now? x Tig

Not yet, but imminently. We've decided to contact them and 'fess up'. We were just going to bear the costs ourselves, but OH said that if we had to make another claim, we'd be in trouble for not disclosing this little lot.
Anyway, getting the dining room floor sanded and polished, and buying a new rug is going to costa lotta! They can pay for the redecoration, too. That won't be for ages - I know that walls take months to dry out.

Geranium at least you are on the up. It will be something that will hamper you for the coming Winter but in general you can get to grasps with normality someday foreseeable soon and that must feel good. Those walls will take ages to dry again and setting the heating high will not be a good idea as you do not want them to dry too fast ( cracks and all ). I keep my fingers crossed for a mild and dry Winter.

Your OH is correct G. If you don't disclose the flood it will invalidate any future insurance and you can be prosecuted for non disclosure. We now have house and contents insurance which excludes flooding - it was the only way we could get insurance and our house flood was 12yrs ago and there has been thousands of pounds of remedial / preventative work done. Bearing that in mind, you may as well get everything that you can, replaced, repaired and redecorated from the insurance company - after all, you have paid the premiums. Good luck

Thanks for confirming what we thought, Auricula. We had decided to peruse our Insurance Policy from end to end today, to make sure we're covered for all the flood damage. We changed Insurers a while ago, to a company that specialises in historic buildings.
I hope they'll renew the policy when they know about this flood! I had a PC meeting last night and we're going to see if we can find out how many homes in the Parish were affected.
The lane (further along) is collapsing - Highways will no doubt be busy elsewhere, but it really is getting difficult to drive on it!

I didn't want to be a Job's Comforter, Geranium, but felt it better that you should know about insurance possibilities. It came as a bit of a shock to us when we first found out. Hope you get yours sorted and that you can still get cover. We now have great cover for every eventuality..... except flooding and we have to stand the whole cost of that ourselves. Don't know how long it has to be since the last flood ( 12yrs in our case) or how much remedial work has to be done ( loads in our cas, all fully documented) before you can get covered again. Be a bit of a problem when we want to sell the house

I'm sure you're right, Auricula. I did read the Policy, but OH has been at work and hasn't finished it yet. Today he should be at home in the afternoon, and we'll be getting onto the Company. We've got the photographs to show the extent of the flooding, and the carpet is outside still. They'll be able to see what needs doing - I'm sure someone will come out to assess it all.
We're not moving anything back downstairs yet - the floors still haven't dried out. I don't really like living in my uncomfortable 'home' at the moment - but once we have the go-ahead, we can start to improve things.
