I thought perzactly the same Amber It woz the cake what enticed them back. The floors look wonderful Geranium, have you got a rug or are you going to buy one? At least with a rug if the threat of flooding does return you can roll it up! x Tig

Didn't I show you the one we've bought? We trekked all the way to Swindon to look at a huuuge rug warehouse as I'd been on their website and chosen one - luckily it was perfick. They're keeping it for us until we're ready. Here 'tis And this is the wallpaper. It only goes half way up the wall - the top half is white plaster.

I remember you posting you'd gone up country to get a rug now you've reminded me It is going to look 'palatial' when it's done, you might have to invest in a crystal chandelier x Tig

Crystal chandeliers? I don't think the Insurance Company will go for those - anyway, the ceilings are too low - we'd bump our heads on them! My son is always bumping his head on the beams when he comes - I keep teling him he should wear his crash hat all the time. What he'd do with a chandelier doesn't bear thinking about!

Those floors look wonderful Geranium, I've always loved the look of parquet floors. I like the colours in your rug too. No wonder they are all working so hard when you provide such yummy cakes.

They're looking good, aren't they! (The floors, I mean. ) I admit it's quite fun choosing new wallpaper and the new rug, but it's the 'why' that's so upsetting, and we're both feeling claustrophobic living in one room Another reason (or do I mean "excuse") for cheering myself up making cakes!

The lemon drizzle cake went all funny - it wasn't right, although it tasted OK. Dunno what happened there! No more cakes for a week - Richard has gone to work on another job but he'll be back next Saturday. It will be strange not having workmen downstairs. A big problem - the removal people who have our furniture in storage want 28 days' notice to get it out - how are we supposed to be able to calculate when the house will be ready to have it back?

Wrong - I made another cake yesterday and it was the best yet! It was an Apple Gingerbread cake, and it was munched with great relish by our floor men who wre here all day, plus a friend who came to give me her recipe for Lemon Drizzle, and also I'd promised to take a piece over to the old lady (Betty). Of course, OH and I had to try it, too - so it's half gone already. Here's a photo of it before it vanishes today when the floor men are coming back...so it worked as a bribe!

There's one piece left - and I'm having it this evening! They ate the rest while I was at church this morning! I think I might make another one tomorrow.

I could have munched it in the sermon. We collected the new rolls of wallpaper yesterday. I asked if I could have at least one of the faulty rolls to give to the local school, but they have to send them all back to Sanderson's. I don't think it would have hurt to give me just one! I'm sure they'll all be thrown away - what a waste.

More cake was eaten yesterday evening - the floor men have finished the three wooden floors. As the wooden sills in the GR are all water-splashed (wonder why? ) we've asked them to come back and sand them down when they have a spare day. I shall have to buy wide greenhouse trays to put all my plants on. Now we wait until Richard comes back - next week!

Richard came on Sunday and papered the dining room. He had to go back to the other job this week so we're in limbo. We have asked for our rug to be delivered a week on Friday though, and the one from the sitting room which went off to be cleaned, as well. Hopefully, by then, the two rooms will have been painted. As for asking the Environment Agaency and the District Council for help advising on flood defences, they say they don't do that. Well who does, then? They looked at the plans OH drew up and said we must make sure we don't pollute the stream with anything while it's being done - NO help whatsoever about whether it would work, nor will anyone actually come here to take a look!

I had a search of the internet Geranium and it seems the only assistance for home-owners comes from private companies, who no doubt charge a significant sum for their consultancy!! There are some grants available, but not for individuals, but if you could get some support within the community, maybe get your local MP signed up, and then the local council?? I don't know what research your OH has done already, but there are some useful pointers on what you'd need to 'prove' here www.environment-agency.gov.uk/research/planning/116703.aspx

Tig, thanks - I think he's seen it already. I'll ask him just in case. I heard about some Govt. grants at the Parish Council Meeting on Tuesday from our District Councillor, and we'll be asking her for more info. It's going to cost a bomb to build a wall etc across the garden, so if we are able to access funds it would be a great help.

Some progress at last! Richard is back and the dining room is finished. Both of the rugs are due to arrive on Friday - the old one and the new one. The carpet is booked for next week, and the furniture is also booked for March 6th. I can't wait! Only another couple of weeks before we have our home back! Oh, and Mark came to look at OH's flood defence plan, and is coming to build the wall in April. All good news today.

His bad leg is even worse - it's definitely the stairs doing it. OH took him to the vet's this morning and he's sending the X-rays to an expert in case he's missed something. We both think he'll improve once he stays downstairs - but it'll be difficult persuading him not to come up after all this time. Richard is painting the walls in the sitting room - great stuff!
