Just found this site, I found it very interesting! I don't want to have to start spraying everything so wondered about companion planting. So many plants beneficial to one another, I never realised how many though! www.ghorganics.com/page2.html

I only grow my veggies in containers and the carrots have been particularly successful. I don't bother to cover them Sweetleaf but do raise the containers off the ground. It's worked for the last few years! ;D

I thought I wouldn't need to buy any more as I over indulged last year, but then you spot a variety that catches your eye and before you know it... Just got some kakai seeds, a pumpkin with hulless seeds. Should make cooking and eating the seeds much easier.

I've done a draft of the seeds and plants I'd like to order and the whole lot comes to approx £150.00 so I may have to cut back. Does anyone think this is too much money to spend on the garden especially when a lot of it is annuals that I order from Gardening direct - diffucult stuff like busy lizzies that are difficult to grow from seed. I think I might stagger the orders then OH might not spot the cheque on the bank statement!!

I would stagger it too .....and have, but Im buying fruit bushes too which hopefully will not have to be bought every year! My last two orders added up to a figure close to yours

I think I may be visiting the local GC for the more obvious veggie seeds and cutting down on the flowers. I have ambitions way above my financial means!!

PS I buy lots of Xanths and fuschias by post as well!! My reasoning being that you cant take your money with you and I'd rather spend it and make the world look lovlier than the government get it!

Well I'm going to buy some carrot seeds and onion sets at work tomorrow and then start doing them on saturday. Been to see the house we will hopefully move into and the garden is south facing <claps> so just need to make sure it becomes available before we move out of here....

Aprilaydee, companion planting is a very interesting subject but be careful about the plant names - some of them on that site can be confused with other plants I think. I always grow nasturtiums and calendula in my veggie garden somewhere and I always plant Basil in my PT where the tomatoes are. And growing native plants around the place mixed up with other garden flowers is another good way to encourage beneficial insects and predators. I know I'm always blahing on about native plants but they really are a brilliant way to do a bit of good for yourself and the environment. Sorry if you know all this but be careful with Comfrey as it roots very deeply so only put it where you really want it, Wormwood is a massive plant and not really very attractive in a garden setting, and Borage will seed everywhere so only introduce it if you really like it! Sorry, gone off topic a bit.....

Yipee... The postman has had to knock at the door with my seed order as it was too big to go through the letter box !! The Organic Catalogue have been efficient once again and dispatched my order in 3 days. I'm now in possession of... Pea - Little Marvel and Waverex (haven't grown either before) Beetroot - Boltardy Broccoli - Early Purple Sprouting Carrot - Nantes 2 and Chantenay Fennel - Finale (hope it's better than the failure I had last summer!) Parsnip - Avonresister (fab grower on my soil) Squash - Marina di Choggia Tomato - Harbinger (good old fashioned variety, but I also grow San Marzano and Santa) Turnip - Purple Top Milan Also, Green Manure and some flowers (Catananche, Delphinium and Sweet Pea) This is just for starters, I'm still waiting on the trials!!

All mine is container based anyway so deep roots aren't a concern!
I've been quite interested in companion planting. Not as fussed about organic etc but I don't want to be spraying everything, I'd rather attract the wildlife to deal with the problem.
I've got quite a lot of wildlife attracting plants already because I like seeing them and know they're beneficial. I got so excited last year when I saw the butterflies and bees around my plants last summer. Was lovely to watch them.
I was loitering around the seed section at work earlier.... ;D

On Potatoes i'm going for Lady Christyl (just love this tattie), Vanessa and Swift. Have grown Nicola for past three years too and they have been excellent salad potatoes that store well after lifting. I grew Edzell Blues one year the taste was really nice just didn't like the colour of the skin....just a personal thing. D T Brown do some heritage potatoes that are black in colour so that may be the ones referred too....again i'm biased when it comes to the skin colour. Will also be growing: Sweetcorn Swift Onions Alba, Red Baron and Sherpa Shallots Golden Gourmet Garlic Giant Wight Carrots Ceres Courgette Bambino French Bean Blue Lake Tomato Marmande (Beefsteak) Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor and Best of All Courgette De Nice a Fruit Rond Butternut Squash Brussel Sprouts Maximus Cabbage Castello Cabbage Duchy Calabrese Marathon Cauliflower Freemont Turnip Purple Top Beetroot Boltardy and anything else i can squeeze into every nook and cranny!

Went to GC on Saturday Pm and got my veggies and flower seeds - got 20% discount in their sale 'cos I could take it away myself! Will have to go back next month early when they start getting in the tiny pots of seedlings ready to prick out that way I can cut down the stuff I get by post. My conscience got the better of me after my postings last week!

Is the GH salvageable in any way or will you need a new one? Dare I suggest Ebay or is that too close to tractor territory? Perhaps the small ads in the local paper would be a better place to look!! You'll need a GH to grow all the seeds that arrived ;D (The still alive) GH

Hee Hee........ just placed a seed order with www.realseeds.co.uk and I don't even have a plot yet!!!!! GH..... you have a lot to answer for! Pea - Hatif d'annonay Leek - Jaune de Poitou (a yellow type?) Early Leek - Meziers Sweetcorn - Double Standard (Bi-colour) Parsnip - Tender and True (bit like me really ) Squash - Thelma Saunders sweet potato (even though it's a squash!) None of these are hybrids so I should be able to save some seed too. That's if I can work out how to do it but apparently, they send all that info with the seeds! Very excited now. Now all I need is an allotment!!! OH says if push comes to shove, I can have a bit more of the garden! (Bless 'im.)

Oh right, is that what hybrids mean that you can't get seeds from them?
I often wondered when they put "propagation prohibited" on some plants too. How would they know if you've taken cuttings?! Or does that mean they physically won't work.
