What is the best way for cleaning out the bottom of a pond with a liner, and how often should it be done. I saw Mr Snail on the side of my liner today Rita, he was trailing a bit of oxy weed with him, would he have been munching on that at the bottom and would it be better to add more.

You got me thinking about my Uncles pond and how it was, I'm going to try and get to see it. If I can I'll take my camera with me. It will bring back lots of good memories for me, will be sad to as he passed away last year.
Any update on you lining yours yet

Hello Folks, just a quick note to let you know that the liner is on order ;D We have gone for the thickest firestone with an underfelt. I still have to be a bit patient though because it is coming from America and is due the 3rd week in March! I will not mention the price, if I have to type it I might have a heart attack

Yeah maybe better not to mention the cost of such a huge liner, but the cost will be worth it in the end, and along with others I can't wait to see the finished product.

We have weeds growing in the hole, do we have to kill them off before the liner is laid or can we just smother them with the underlay?
Just had a phone call to say the liner is on it's way ;D

Annual weeds will simply be killed off by the exclusion of light and indeed the pressure of the weight of the water DB.
It may be as well to remove any perennial weeds, in case these continue to grow and threaten to compromise the integrity of the liner.

They will die if smothered, lack of light, so don't bother killing them. Are there any big rooted ones? Might be worth pulling them up, so the soil settles afterwards.

Thank you Spruance and Keith, I think we will be fine as they are only small and nothing too bad. I will check again when the rain stops.

You'll soon be there DB and think how wonderful it's going to look. Trying to have some positive thoughts for you......at least with it raining the ground will be nice and soft for the liner to settle into

DB - You may find it useful in the future, to know how much water your pond holds, so I would recommend using a water meter when filling your pond - if you can In the UK it is possible to have the sewerage costs on our water bills adjusted after filling a pond.

Thank you Rita, the OG has worked it out already(isn't he a clever clogs!) The liner is due here on Thursday, it's on 2 pallets!!! We are waiting to hear when our friend and his jcb are free. We have found an English chap who owns a brewery so will have to get some beer in for the workers. ;D DB

Keith, We are on a water meter, the charges are split - one amount for the water coming into the house, and a second charge for the amount of water leaving the house, the foul water, which I think is 90% of what is metered in. Anglian water will allow a reduction in the sewerage charges for pond filling, if you give them a before and after meter reading.

Does a very large (280g) fish tank get included in this as well? Keith Keith
