Well folks I'm back ;D Thanks for all your ideas on the places to visit for pond plants. I found that you were right about Baytree Keith, It's very good and they had loads of pond plants too! Downtown was a waste of time for aquatic plants but I did well for clothes and shoes Waterside GC in Baston near Bourne also had a lot of nice plants but I had already been to Baytree. Still I will know for the next visit. The baskets are cheaper here but I have to travel to get them. DB

What day did you go to Baytree, as, after I mentioned it to you, decided to go there on the Saturday? We only thought about it the night before so couldn't make plans to meet up, while we were there. What did you buy there? Downtown isn't great for plants, but the garden centre is always worth a visit. I must admit to forgetting about Waterside G/C, haven't been there for ages. Keith

Hi Keith, I think it was Wednesday when I visited Baytree GC., I will let you know next time I am planning a trip over and maybe we could meet up. ;D I bought: Houttuynia chameleon Epilobium aungustifolium Veronica beccabunga Lysimachia Punctatr variegata Rumex Sanguineus (reminds me of beetroot!) Achillea ptarmica Orontium Zantedeschia aethiopica Crowborough APonogeton Distachyus and lots of oxygenating plants !! I have loads of work to do on the veg patch and the flower borders so I'm having a couple of days catching up and having to leave the pond alone db

Oooh, good choices. Not heard of the Epilobium, will look it up. I nearly had one of those Orontiums, but wondered if I have the right conditions, re. depth of water. Also wife said, but you could buy it online cheaper. I thought, good idea, until Rita told me it took hers three years to flower, so may go back, as they were good plants. Any left!!!? Did you like the pond inside? My kids love that with the bridge across! How long did you spend there, as it is such a big place? Just looked epilobium up, willowherb, looks nice! Might get one myself!

Good choice but be very careful with the houttuynia. Even the nice variegated ones can become invasive. Maybe plant it so its roots can't escape.

Thanks for that Duchy! Since buying the houttuynia lots of people have said the same They will be planted into baskets so I hope they will be ok. Just had to share my news of the day; I saw a kingfisher swooping over the pond, what a sight ;D Oh and Keith I've looked at the price of the Orontium and it was only 2.95 ! It was one of just a couple that I found at Waterside. The ones at Baytree were in aquatic baskets ready to put into the water but they were about 10.00 !! Loved the pond inside, will take the grandchildren next time

Oooh db,
I have a biggish pond but not that big. Wish mine was lots bigger. It will be absolutely fantastic when you've done. It's really hard work but try to keep your eyes on a vision of the end result and that will keep you motivated. You'll get all sorts of wildlife visiting and taking up residence and it is such a joy to watch and to learn from. I found the biggest water beetle I've ever seen in mine this year - double edged sword though, because I knew it would eat the tadpoles! Cant have one without the other - pleasure and pain that is! Nature, eh - blooming marvellous and awful at the same time.

Hi again, thought it was about time for another photo, here is one taken this morning i151.photobucket.com/albums/s130/dirtyboots_2007/DSCF0189.jpgHave spent all my spare time on the edging,no fingernails left at all. Still Im nearly there! Thanks Shrub,we are loving all the wildlife, the birds are using it lots. We have swallows swooping for the insects and pied wagtails feeding their young on the banks. Also hundreds of baby frogs, I have found big frogs under the liner, you should hear the noise at night. db

How amazing does that look DB it's really looking the business now. Just looked back at the first pic you posted, you have worked so hard in the last 6-7 months. Glad to hear the wildlife are appreciating it too. Just imagine this time next year it will be unrecognisable.

Hello db,
It is going to be just stunning. I can imagine you spending all your time there! I would!!! Wish I could hear the frogs. Actually, wait till next Feb........I bet you'll be deafened during the mating season. Grand (not by being deafened that is!).
We had some beautifully coloured dragon flies last weekend blues and reds - darting about and laying their eggs in the water. Thought we'd lost all our taddies but there are still a few around - sprouting little legs. Haven't seen Mr (or Mrs?) Big Beetle again but I'm sure he'll turn up.
Enjoy it now, you've really earned the right to.
Shrub.

Thanks for the kind comments folks. I'm very busy with car club runs and visitors at the moment so this is just a quick visit. The plants are growing very well and the liner is hidden at last!!
Frogs are still in full voice, quite nice to listen to in the evening.
Now I'm thinking of the path around the pond, ideas please !!
The first thought was that there wouldn't be a path at all, but we have found that people walk around anyway.
Looking forward to having time to chat ;D

It's coming on beautifully db.
Putting a path around it would cost a fair bit, whatever you chose to lay. What about using bark mulch? Do you shred woody plants and such? That might be a good way to recycle and get your path (bit by bit, admittedly).
