I bought it as a single headed plant and it flowered the following year.
I have another twice the size that I grew from seed but it's a bit fragile to move and photo well.

For some reason I thought it was a long wait to get flowers on most cacti, probably never in my case Thanks for the info Tig It's not a cactus... It's a succulent. A Stapeliad to be precise. There a few other Stapeliads with black flowers. It flowers every year Sunny. Most cacti and succulents flower every year once they get to flowering size.

What is the difference between cacti and succulents then mick?

What is the difference between cacti and succulents then mick? Technically a cactus has an areole but a succulent doesn't. The areole is the bit where buds and shoots arise. Don't go by a cactus being prickly btw. There are cacti without spines e.g. Astrophytum asterias and succulents with spines e.g Euphorbia canariensis.

Sunny, here's a picture of cacti - 3 of them spineless (Astrophtum asterias top left). Unfortunately I don't have a picture of a spiny succulent but there are plenty of them -

About 2 to 3 days depending on the weather for the above. That was taken in autumn last year.
Some last only a day in summer in hot weather though.

What about water, we watered once a weak but I think that was too much.

Water them when they are dry i.e. water then leave until they have completely dried out then water again. Only water when we have good weather not overcast. No water between mid- September and April in general terms. Oh, and I always give a weak feed at each watering say, 1/4 strength tomato food. If using tap water acidify it with a capful of clear vinegar to 2 gallons of water.
