I managed to snap a couple this morning, they were flighty little things though Common Blue Orange Tip I don't think I would have spotted it in the closed position, what a difference! x Tig

I agree - that little Blue is beautiful, particularly as it's on a muscari (?) - it almost looks as though the photo is tinted

It was on muscari Plocket, the colours are exactly as the photo came off the camera, but all my other shots were paler, I think it is how the light reflects back off their wings. I crouched down to take that photo, must just have been a better angle.
Thank you all for the nominations, I always feel lucky to get a half decent photo.

For once I was patient PJ, they were both flitting for a while, and I waited for them to settle. The orange tip landed and basked in the sun, so I could get quite close, probably about 10" to a foot away. The common blue was a bit more tricky 'cos everytime it landed it closed its wings But I had crouched down beside the wall when it landed on the muscari and was probably still about 1' away, but my camera lets me zoom in on macro x Tig

That Common (not that common is it?) Blue is gorgeous, Tig! Have you got chalklands nearby? I thought you only found blue butterflies on chalk uplands Certainly don't have them around here, they're all on the South Downs, down the road a bit

Same family This was hiding on the fence after I pruned the leaves off the toms, about an inch and three quarter long, can't identify it from my books, so I have asked the man from UK moths!! But if anyone here has any ideas in the interim? x Tig

Nice to know that we have the same things in our gardens, even if we are in different countries and they are as common as muck. Have you seen them fly - the flash of yellow/orange is lovely.

Is it just me I have hardly seen any butterflies this year, apart from cabbage whites! Usually we have peacocks, red admirals, commas, and painted ladies on the buddleia! Anyway I snapped this today - Meadow Brown - not as colourful but it is a butterfly x Tig

lovely pic Tig, funny you should post about not seeing any, I was in the garden today and just thinking the same thing. My buddlea is in full bloom, the perenial purple wallflower is blooming and not a butterfly in sight. Strange!!

Nothing strange about it here. They don't like rain and don't fly too well in dull weather. We seem to be getting oodles of both the above!! I did see some unidentified browns and some cabbage whites the other day when the sun came out but haven't seen a Peacock or Red Admiral since the Spring. If we have another summer like this it could seriously affect the butterfly numbers (I've read that somewhere but can't remember where now).

Having said that the sun was out when we went on our dog walk this AM and the track was alive with butterflies on all the wildflowers. No pics as they move too quick but there were various browns and frittilaries, cabbage whites (tough things they are aren't they!) and one Tortoiseshell. No Commas, Red Admirals or Peacocks tho'.

This was enticed into our front bedroom last night .. Riband Wave (Idaea aversata) Moth -30mm wingspan And this afternoon I spotted a butterfly with orange on the wings, but it was high up on the buddleia and flew off before I could identify it x Tig

A Marbled White . They may be common in some places but I had never seen one before! It was very nervous and flitty so this was the closest I could get it (with 10x zoom). BTW Tig, I reckon that's a Red Admiral. Gorgeous Buddleia too!

Just a common Comma but a pleasure to see all the same. It was flitting round my Golden Hop for ages which, according to my book, is one of the food plants of the caterpillars so p'raps it was thinking of laying some eggs but kept getting put off by me and my camera!
