It seems to have been quite a good year for butterflies here...at any one time we've had several species...and one day in August we had NINE painted ladies.... ;D (as well as looooooooaaads of cabbage whites.....)

So you're the one who has been hogging all the butterflies, CPB. It has not been a good year here for me. Even with the butterfly bushes in bloom, I haven't seen more than 2 monarchs at any one time in the garden. Not good. Not much better for bees.

I didn't expect to see any after the gales yesterday, let alone the 4c temps last night! But out came the sunshine and I spotted this - not a fullstop, more of a comma ;D Then when it lifted its wings the shadow was really nice .. and a fly came to share his 'towel' x Tig

A lot of beautiful butterflies in the garden today despite the time of year. Red Admiral, small tortoishell and a comma were all basking in the sunshine, but I was a bit busy and had mucky hands - did manage to snap this one after I'd cleaned myself up a bit .. x Tig

The first one that I have seen....now we know that Spring is really on the way... RF Lucky you RF - think ours are still in hiding as it is blinking chilly in the wind today, not to mention the torrential downpours that some numpty got caught in while digging tatty trenches! Just 'cos I'm looking forward to seeing some sooooon i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cheesy.gif x Tig

Good grief - is this the same German garden that was under all that snow?

Incredible isn't it - nearly 3 months of snow and then the first butterfly - well it isn't the first actually. I saw a cabbage white/yellow nearly a week ago but couldn't get a shot.
Thanks for the noms.

Lovely Plocket. the 1st of August is butterfly spotting day, they want people to report any butterflys and daytime moths that they see, so they can assess the numbers , I saw it on the BBC homepage so I'm not sure where the web site is. .

It looks like a Comma Rosefriend. If you see another, try and look on the underside of the wing, and there should be a little white "comma" shape

That's the problem isn't it? They flitter about like goodness knows what!!! ;D My parents get a lot of them in their garden - they are gorgeous understated butterflies.

Well done Plocket, would have been a good POTM3 worth - I can safely say that I have never seen that and oddly enough google doesn't say too much about it either....not the sites that I have seen anyway.
Will certainly try make a pic, now that I know.
