Sorry purplejulia, didn't mean to give the impression that the clay was responsible for the blackspot. It's more a case that with the torrential rain last summer, the ground was warm and drenched pretty much constantly, so ideal for the evil blackspot Let's hope this year gives us a better season Which roses have you planted, pj? I'm a fairly new convert myself! ;D As you say, I am sure the torrential rain didn't help growing conditions for roses, so regardless of soil type my roses were not properly taken care of by me I bought several roses by mail order: Rhapsody in Blue Big Purple Cloud Nine Millionnaire Shakespeare Crimson Glory Eden Rose 88 (year of my son's birth!) Rambling Rector Tickled Pink - supposed to be Rose of the Year 2007 but looking very dead! PJ

Aw, don't be too hard on yourself pj, I don't think any of us were able to take care of our gardens in the usual way last summer That's a lovely list you've got there! How was your Rhapsody in Blue? I don't know anyone who's grown it, although I've heard great things

Quite a few members will know that I have moved and have a very small garden now. I want to 'plant' a couple of Climbing roses to make use of the vertical space in this garden. The area I have in mind is approx:-10ft ht.x12ftwide. (either side of a Porch) One side facing East the other facing West. The two I have in mind are;- 'Santana'--Red 'Coral Dawn'--Pink with dark Green foliage There is another one I can choose and that is:- Indigoletta'-Violet in colour-- I would appreciate any other suggestions if these are not really suitable.

I do know those climbers and the Indigoletta is not as dark as it is pictured....it is in fact a much lighter mauve but it is a vigorous climber as are all of them.
Coral Dawn is quite nice actually, - the flowers are a pink peachy colour and Santana is also a beautiful shade of red. The only problem with Santana is that it does like to have Black Spot and I know of one in our area that rarely has a leaf after July. The owner only keeps it because of the flowers.
Plus all three are of the type that the bottom of the plant becomes very bare relatively early in their lives.
I am not trying to put you off Bigggles as I find nearly all roses to be attractive in their own right but then I am rose lover.

Thanks for your reply RF, it has been a great help. I might just stick to Coral Dawn for one side for now and if I come across any others I see in the GC or Rose Catalogues maybe you would be able to help me with the choice for the other side.

Hia! I didn't prune my roses at the end of last year and am wondering when it's safe to prune them because they are putting on lots of new growth?

Hi Plocket - I would prefer someone in the UK to answer this as well as I wouldn't prune mine here, - but I think it is safe for the UK at this time of the year.

You've got to do it by the end of this month Plo. I would just go and give them a look over and take the usual dead, crossing and badly placed out. That's all I've done with my eager beavers but the ones still sleeping I've taken back by about a third.

Hi Mrs P as you have heard me say before, it is difficult to do any lasting damage. Given I have been know to use shears and as Amo said the council workers with strimmers. So I am sure your Felco Number 2 will do little damage. All mine are showing signs of life, so will be reduced where neccesary before the month is out.

Thank you Fozzie They are in containers but touching the house so I don't think even the cold nights we are having at the moment should harm them. In fact some of them have lovely lush leaves starting to grow so I've high hopes for this year

I hope an expert rose grower can help me. Just looked at one of my rose bushes and saw these insects on the stem. I have looked in the book Rose Expert and RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening. Can't see a photo of the pest but I have come to the conclusion it could be "leafhoppers". I am scared that all my roses are going to be blighted. My first thought was to spray it with soapy washing up water. Any ideas please. Here are the culprits - they are a yellowy orange colour. You may need glasses or a magnifying glass - sorry PJ

Hi PJ - I have certainly never seen anything like that before - perhaps Foz has. If they are Leafhoppers - again I have never had problems with them on my roses.
I personally use insecticides but do by all means spray with soapy water - it can't harm no matter what. I will have a look on the web and see if I can find anything else out.

PJ I think it is Rose Sawfly Have a look here .. third down on the right www.hainaultforest.co.uk/3MiniBeasts.htmIt seems their caterpillars will decimate a plant - there are suggestions for treating it on the web, but I'm no rose expert, so maybe others can advise x Tig

Tig, thank you so much for researching this for me. Rose Sawfly it is! You have a good eye as my photo wasn't that clear. Had a look today and the beasts were gone. I am frightened now that all my rose bushes will be blighted and don't really want to use any chemicals. I will read up on the subject and do what I have to do.
Thank you so much.

You are welcome PJ I reckon they will have laid their eggs, it may be worth rubbing the underside of the leaves with your fingers if they are not too prickly, that may get rid of some of them before they hatch! x Tig

That looks a great website Tig and it is obviously the Rose Sawfly - I am pleased that I have never have the "mini-beasties" here, on my roses.

Just checked my rose bush again and I've just seen the little b******s on the stems and leaves again. I am off to the GC to find some organic insect killer. They mention 4 - on of which is called Doff All In One Garden Pest Killer. See if I can find it. I will have a go at cleaning the leaves by hand first, but it is wet and cold at the moment so a good time to go to the GC and to look at water butts while I am there. I may buy some goodies to cheer me up too. PJ

PJ, Sorry for delay. Just got back, I have only seen/had the leaf rolling type to contend with, so far! I use the tactile (finger thumb) method failing that then try soap spray, also found at the GC. At larvae stage the finger thumb is probably the best, you could always wear thin gloves. F

I tend to use the finger and thumb method mostly these days PJ, saying that it did used to make me cringe. You really do get hardened to it and just dont think about it, go on it's really uite satisfying once you get used to it ;D I still cringe a little, sometimes
