Well that wasn't a success. I got some yeast when I was doing the shopping this morning and got home to find that I didn't have any bread flour left in the cupboard!

Guess we'll be making bread next week rather than this week unless I get to a supermarket before that, but I am trying really hard not to make unnecessary car journeys.

Is it too far to walk then Jas?

Our closest shop is 4 miles away and you really wouldn't want to walk some of these country lanes. When we moved here from London it was one of the hardest things to get used to. I would get back from my weekly trip to Sainsburys and have forgotten something and would have to make do because I couldn't just pop round the corner anymore!

I'm going to bake some bread today... when my Dad's gone home. Can't really bake bread while he's trying to tile the kitchen whilst getting most of the stuff on the floor....

Did you manage to make it in the end April?
Is the kitchen finished now then?

Nah, went shopping instead and now got visitors. Kitchen is still a mess so won't bother until it's finished.

I was looking back to see if I could find the original pics of your kitchen but couldn't find them....a before and after pic would be nice...especially if there a loaf of bread in the pic...(staying on topic ;D)

Well, having finally got bread flour we are in the middle of making bread rolls. The boys enjoyed 'pounding' the bread (their word) and it was used to make ducks etc... in between poundings. It is now in the airing cupboard. Should be interesting to see how it responds to having been 'pounded'! It could be the new kneading!

That's a very cute avatar MRH! We have 15 very nice looking bread rolls (not a duck in sight!) and the small of bread is absolutely gorgeous. The boys are very pleased with themselves too!

It's funny you should ask! ;D Oldest twin asked if he could try some and I said no as it would spoil his supper. Then I thought - well one roll won't hurt! So...we have all tried one and now we are trying to resist the others! Perhaps we won't need any supper!

Not only does it taste good making it is addictive too..... Still it's a way of passing the time especially if it's pouring outside..
Next you will have to get them to make something that they can eat the bread with...soup maybe?

I did think that. Leek and potato soup and home made bread - yum! A friend of mine has a fussy small boy but he does like pea and ham soup so any soup she makes is pea and ham soup and he eats it. He is small enough to trick like that...my fussy one is too old! You do need a bit of spare time for bread but you can get on with other things while it does its proving etc...

How easy do you think it would be to offer leek and potato soup as haribo and wine gum soup?

I've got a bun in the oven!!
Well, it's a loaf actually... ;D
Making my first wholemeal loaf so we'll see how that goes. Making it to go with tea which is a casserole type thing. I'm not putting it in the oven until the time is right so it's out for when the OH gets home cos otherwise there'll be none left for tea <whistles>
