Thanks ladies, I am going to knock my next few lessons back to an hour twice a week. Maybe 2 hours at a go is overkill? My Dad was impressed with me when I was telling him about it today, and that has built me up a bit. Karl thinks I will only regret it if I give up and he is usually right (dont dare tell him that tho ) Will just have to see how it goes over the next few weeks.........cant let Girlydom down now can I ;D

I agree. They say you only regret what you DON'T do. If you don't see this through do you think you'll regret it?

Two one hours lessons a week might be a good idea - you don't want to get too tired and find you aren't doing things as well as you could. Keep going KL - you want to do it and we are all rooting for you

I can do this............. I CAN do this............ I can DO this............. I can do THIS............ I CAN DO THIS.......... Been chatting to some of the lads at work (I do that a lot dont I ) they reckon they all felt like packing in at some point when they were learning, one even went off and became a red coat, and came back to it later in life I know if I give in now I will be sorry. So onwards and forwards (hopefully in the right gear, at the right speed and on the right side of the road ;D ) Thanks again -

Hi All, bit miffed this evening. Had to cancel my lesson for this weekend, so phoned Melv and wanted to rebook a one hour lesson, as after my previous lesson my confidence is a bit low. Anyway he tried to tell me that I cant have an hour as its not worth it "You wont learn anything in an hour" Charming. I dont particularly expect to learn anything I want to build my confidence up a bit. So what do you think

|
Post by Plocket on May 21, 2008 18:22:27 GMT
Oh NO!!! Do you trust Melv? If you do then I would go with what he says. However I would have thought that a lesson longer than an hour would be very tiring and you wouldn't learn much after the hour anyway. Try explaining you need to build up your confidence - you've had hour long lessons before haven't you? If so, why not this time?

To be honest KL, although two hours is tiring, I always feel that if a class only lasts for an hour, just as I am getting into my stride, it's time to stop. I have only learned a car and a motorbike, nothing heavy like a lorry, so it's not really comparable. Also, if you make a mistake, with a longer lesson, you have time perhaps to sort it out, rather than go home and worry about it. Remember sweetie, it's very early days. I was in my mid-forties when I took my bike lessons. I had never been on a bike before, I was twice the age of everyone else, the only woman, and I looked more like Mary Poppins than a biker chick. Mentally, I felt I would never manage and that idea really held me back. A little voice in my head kept whispering "What do you think you are up to, trying to do this?" If you are feeling that way too, and I sense you might be, try not to let that little voice win. Never let the little voice beat you. You know you can do this thing. I truly believe than if they put their mind to it there is very little a woman cannot do. And you are strong. YOU CAN DO IT. One hour, two hours, do what you can. But believe in your capabilities. Go kick ass girl.

Cheers WeeT can you come and live with me - you always build me up ;D I am going with the 1 hour lesson for the next one, because I want to try and get it right and get my confidence back. 2 hours is soooo long when you think you are rubbish at something! If it all goes according to plan I will go back to 2 hours at a time. If it dont I might enquire about changing instructors? I'm not sure that Melv is the right man for me (if you see what I mean!) I dunno whats up with me - its not like me to be so wishy washy about things I am usually quite direct (a bit too much Mum reckons) but I cant seem to make my mind up about this. Had a "special offer" from another training provider today as well. Might look into that but its such a good deal there HAS to be a catch

Didn't mention it before in case it gave you ideas. But now you have had the idea, I can tell you that I changed motorbike school. At the first one, I was left alone for a moment in their office and I spied on what they had written about me after my first lesson. It said "Not very competent " Well, after one hour never having been on a bike before, I should think I wasn't very competent. I didn't even know how to kickstart the bloody thing! The other school was so different, very encouraging, and they started with the assumption that I knew absolutely nothing. So if you have doubts, change. It is important that you have an empathy with your instructor.

KL if i can drive a forklift you can drive a truck a friend of mine does it and she is also a woman You can do it keep on going girl. Karen xx Karen, I too can drive a fork-lift , but my trial run for aptitude for HGV was a disaster!! And that was only a 7-tonner!! Karlslass, you don't seem to have much rapport with this Melvyn. If you don't really trust him maybe he's not the right instructor for you Good luck

Yeah the changing instructors is looking more and more likely. The more I think about it the less I like the bloke, which makes things slightly awkward!. Lesson tomorrow - see how I go

Remember who is paying KL! A good instructor should tailor the lesson to the aptitude and confidence of the student, make sure you put your 'confident woman driver' head on before you go. Do you know how many people he has taught who have passed their test first time? Ask him (I dare you ) x Tig

I think it's probably just a "people" thing. He might be a perfectly OK instructor, but you and him just don't click Whatever the reason, it looks like you'll have to change Who knows, the next one you try might be the guy for you and you can relax and get on with learning. I remember when I learned to drive, I tried 2 that I didn't feel happy with (one was a woman - I didn't like that for some reason) . Then I found a man who seemed to be on my wavelength and sailed through the test first time! You can't get on with everybody

Think you are right Nightowl. My daughter loved an instructor, we knew him through mutual friends. I know without a doubt I'd have wanted to strangle him, despite him having an excellent reputation.

Exactly Wee One, (hope you are totally recovered now) If you are sitting next to someone who makes you grind your teeth just by being there, you're never going to learn anything!

Had a brilliant lesson - loved it! Still not mad keen on Melv tho I am looking around for another place, until I find one I shall persevere ;D Actually drove through doncaster town centre at 4pm AND pulled into the petrol station (on a roundabout IF you dont mind!) and back out again Only mixed the gears up twice. Feel like I have made progress this time.

I hereby declare that you should dump Melvyn and get a decent instructor. Is it going to be difficult to find a new one?

Whhooooooo hooooo!!!! You go girl!!! Our new factory site has a large yard and the day before yesterday an 18 wheeler swung into it, did an about face and pulled out again. Now it may be a big yard by our standards but an 18 wheeler soon shrinks it and whilst the others were going grrrrr whats he doing in our yard I was going, yeah but you've got to have balls to know you can just swing that thing around like that!!! It was really cool!!! You are so on your way to being really cool KL! AND a girly one!!!
