I bought Garden News for the first time today. It's very veggie and showingy but I quite enjoyed it.Don't think I'd pay £2 a week for it though The Garden is sent out over about a week, so I'll get mine next week sometime Good for you!!....you should be able to get it on subscription a lot cheaper than that....they do try to have a broad spectrum of interest....they visit some lovely readers' gardens too.... i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif

I enjoy folk talking about their garden and what they've done this week. They usually visit someone's garden and talk about it in fair detail too Auricula. Carol Klien does a 2 page spread about something or other. There are quite often free seeds too.

Auricula should put her order in now for her copy although there can't be much you and she don't know about them.

Can't afford the luxury of magazines I'm afraid I have been toooooooo free with the debit card and now have noooooo money left My RHS magazine came this week and I really enjoyed the makeover they've done on it.It was a very interesting read methinks

I really like the RHS magazine. I've just renewed my subscription - it was a good deal if it was done by direct debit! The magazine is worth the subscription alone I think.

That's what I think Jasmine.I have been in the RHS for about 6 years now.I generally go to Rosemoor once a year, and occasionally to Wisley ( on our way back from the kids) and Hyde Hall, but it is the magazine which is the biggest draw..... oh, and the seeds you can send for, from the seed bank

Oh yes - I'd forgotten about the seeds.

Next week's plant of the week in GN is penstemons! Well, it had lots of pics of slightly more unusual penstemons and they did a detailed bit on taking cuttings and growing them in compost. I thought it was interesting that they chose Allwoods as their penstemon specialist - they have no where near the choice of Haylofts i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif The bit about not liking root disturbance was interesting too - I often move mine around and apart from a bit of a wilt for the first 2 days they don't seem to mind being moved at all. Did anyone else read it?

No Jas , but I move my penstamons around to, and they dont seem bothered at all by it.

Yes I read it but I honestly thought it was pretty basic stuff and could have applied to anything. I did'nt however, realise that Raven grew so tall. My cuttings are alive and well in water and if they do I'll have about 3-4 plants. I should have done more research beforehand as I may struggle to place them.

I thought it was pretty basic too LG....I've moved plants before with no problem either. Surprised they used Allwoods though...their main business is carnations and pinks. I find most penstemons get pretty big and very woody after a while...just as well they are so easy from cuttings....

It was basic and you're right LG - could have been about almost any plant. Raven is a tall one and sometimes not hardy. I planted a 'Raven' at the back of my penstemon bed and it isn't Raven and it isn't tall. Another one to move then! ;D I'm glad you said you move yours Barbara - I moved poor Garnet 4 times before I was happy with where it was

Fingers crossed for you LG. Most of my icecream penstemon haven't even got buds on so I may never see them Perhaps we'll have a mild winter to go with our mild (wash out) summer.

I bought The English Garden this week as I'd run out of stuff to read and there was an article by Toby Buckland on the nursery he's opening in Devon. This was the first part of a 3 part series. Apparently the idea came about because he'd grown lots of plants for Gardeners World before his contract got terminated.

Good luck to him. It must have come as quite a shock to him to have his contract terminated.

You get that feeling LG when you read his web site. I found it googling to look for his nursery - which I didn't find.
