Jilly is dead right Jasmine . It can break out onto the fields and streamsides all it wants ( and it does ) it's when it takes over my beds and you need a JCB to dig out the mat of old corms, that it gets me down Then... it just dies down...and... up comes the wild garlic

Our wild garlic isn't so bad now as all the diggings from the drainage work on the playing field was piled up where the wild garlic was so it's under about 5ft of clay!

This months RHS mag "The Garden" is fab with some wonderful features on both Bressingham and a Belgian garden. Just goes to show what colour can be around at this time of year.
Of the two, methinks Bressingham needs visiting next year....it looks inspirational.

Definately worth a go Jasmine. Mine have multiplied and I have quite a lot of them. I'll be thinning them out after they've died down. I can send you a couple of them if you'd like. I grow them at the edge of the middle border where they get any sunshine we have, it's dry more than well drained there.

I've never had any luck with them either. Was going to get some this year but I have nowhere suitable for them now

He said something about sowing straight away didn't he - and that bought seeds were so far past their best by date by the time they got to the customer...or am I making it up

He said something about sowing straight away didn't he - and that bought seeds were so far past their best by date by the time they got to the customer...or am I making it up Yes that's what he was saying Jasmine. He was saying that sometimes the instructions to get perennials going are so complicated, sometimes needing stratification etd... Then the poor gardener thinks they've done something wron when so few if any of them germinate. He said the best way to grow Perennials is to get some seeds from neighbours/friends/clubs. Certainly made me think. Interesting that we were talking about Nerines and there was an article about them too. Mine are coming into flower now. They were saying that it's best to get them from someone who is dividing them rather than buying them as they have more chance of doing well quicker without having to wait a couple of years for them to flower. They advise dividing in springtime just as they're starting to grow again. Glad I read that as I did'nt know.

You read the nerine section closely Ladygardener - I think I skimmed over it as I didn't have any! I wonder about all these bulbs in the GC at the moment and feel sorry for some of them which will have dried beyond hope and then won't grow.

Yes that's the thing I often wonder about Jasmine. I try to buy my bulbs as soon as they're in the shops. I guess the ones ordered online are fresher, they'd be kept in much better conditions.

Certainly from somewhere like Avon Bulbs Ladygardener but SR was selling freesias bulbs that had been kept in 'special conditions' and not allowed to dry out and if I remember right only 2 of the bulbs came to anything

I've never grown freesias but have seen them in the shops. I did hear a long time ago that they're difficult to grow so have avoided them Jasmine.

I thought they'd be ok given the sales blurb but I wouldn't bother again Ladygardener. I've finished GI Jilly so will get it in the post along with your seeds!
