Enjoyed it, but thought the commentary during the athletes parade was rubbish, Hazel Irvine kept nattering instead of telling us about the country and its team. The rest of it was entertaining. Loved the making of the cauldron, very different

I loved the lighting of the cauldron idea - it was a spectacular end to the whole opening ceremony. Who'd have thought the Queen could parachute! ;D

We stayed up to watch it....well past our bedtime of course....which I why I didin't wake up till after 8am i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif It was very good in paats, but like all these things, a bit long winded. the pyrotechnics were excellent and I was pleased Steve Redgrave "did the honours".....it was a smashing idea to have the young people do the actua; lighting of the cauldron. That was indeed a work of art.....brilliant concept. I want to know why Paul McCartney was there at the end?...he hasn't got the voice he used to have...it was at that point we went to bed.

Actually watched the last hour this morning as we are an hour ahead and we couldn't keep our eyes open...
Loved it all and the cauldron was a marvellous idea, as was having young people to light it..
As I said before the person whop sang "Abide with me" was a disaster in our eyes, a childrens choir would have wonderful at that point and more poignant...
I agree - must Beckham be everywhere - not a fan of him and his wife and although I had a poster of Paul McCartney in my bedroom 40 odd years ago I do think he is too long in the tooth these days...mind you, better than Elton John anyway!!
Our commentators got on my nerves but then they always do - I want to hear the English and they keep translating everything...

Yes, where was BoJo??? I like David Beckham and think he is a great ambassador for the country. He is someone known around the world, apparently in company with James Bond and Mr Bean ;D ;D Thought Paul McCartney looked and sounded past his best but, at least,as RF says, it makes a change from Elton John ;D I'm glad it has been received favourably around the globe, I agree the GOSH was confusing and the literature bit was too longwinded, but all in all we didn't make pr**s of ourselves ;D. I love the athletes parade, they must be sooo proud

They did, and they looked a bit "staid" too ;D I do wish Cameron would "lighten up " at these occasions, or at least let SamCam cheer and wave like Michelle O did. Charles and Camilla were having a good laugh at one point

I watched a good bit of it last night and caught up with the rest of it this morning. I thought it was excellent and felt very much that I was watching a bit of history. Jenny let Hannah stay up to watch some of it too and she loved it. ;D The amount of planning must have been astronomical as was the dedication of all the participants. I think it did us proud and the pyrotechnics at the end were fantastic, oh and I loved the sketches with James Bond+ The Queen, Mr. Bean and I thought it was good to see David Beckham arriving with the torch on the boat. Loved how the Steve Redgrave ran with the torch and then handed it over to the next generation to light the copper kettles and the cauldron.

I thought it was good, excellent in parts and not so in others, but you can't please all the people all the time Loved the humorous bits, Mr Bean, James Bond and the notion of her Maj parachuting out of a copter with her bloomers on display to the world was inspirational, she's a good sport for participating ;D Saw Charles and Cammy having a good laugh when the camera panned onto them at one point. Who really cares about the 'dignitaries and celebrities' though, it is the people taking part in the actual events who are the 'stars' Hope Mark Cavendish does well in the road race! Go for gold team GB!!! x Tig

Dunno who sang "Abide with me" but she wasn't very good at all....OH and I were not impressed... RF RF, it was Paloma Faith, a "singer/actress" brought up in Hackney. I agree with you, she sung a dreadful version of the song. I suppose they chose her cos she was a local girl. She done a few cr*p versions of other artists songs before. I did enjoy the ceremony and I was very cynical about the whole Olympic thing, but Danny Boyle did a fantastic job. I enjoyed doing the celeb spotting Kenneth Branagh as Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Queeny looked a bit miserable in the audience though. She must have been a bit tired after her parachute jump. I enjoyed the Mr Bean performance too. The best bit was the lighting of the Olympic flames at the end and the amazing firework display. We could see bright lights from the fireworks in the distance from our window. Think I'll watch the cycling today if its on the box.

Thanks PJ - well as the Hymn was for remembrance my OH said that it was a wonder that they didn't all turn over in their graves...ouch !!!!!
I think that the whole think was done very well indeed - one or two things were not clear to start with and I really do think that people outside of England would have had to rely on their commentators as to what exactly was happening....we did and I am English!!
It must have been a nightmare to organize but one thing I did like is that people had fun, they laughed and had smiles on their faces....the way it should be...
I liked Mr Bean and the Queen and Mr Bond... good ideas from someone...just watching cycling, rowing and swimming...

I watched the whole event and afterwards couldnt sleep a wink The best bits for me were the "doves" ie the men on bikes with flapping lit wings - awesome I actually thought the bit about the Queen jumping out of the 'plane in bad taste - cant think why she agreed to it but she didnt look at all happy either There is so much musical talent cant think why they didnt book say Tom Jones with his powerful voice - it would fill the stadium We got a silver in the women's cycle PJ

Cracking cycle race hope the girl who ended up in the nettles is not still scratching I'm so glad our girl cycled her own race and didnt rely on the rest of the team like Cavendish did (sorry) I could have understood it if it was a team race but at the end we got a medal, to me the press put too much pressure on some people to do well and then when they fail all hell breaks loose. Will be watching Daley and Waterfield in the diving this afternoon, good luck to both of them

Well done to our male gymnasts, they took bronze this evening. They were all set to have a silver but then there was an inquir after Japan appealed. Hard luck to Daley and Waterfield. I thought they did 3 great dives to start off but then had a really poor 4th.
