I know they're 'commercial' so should be able to put on a show, but I thought this was a stunning display for a little family-run place as I went past last evening, so snapped it on the way back: OM.

What a riot of colour that is ;D definatley an eye catching display. I've not gone mad this year, only done a wall basket with geraniums, varigated nepeta and white lobelia and a couple of hanging baskets with just varigated nepeta in, very boring compared to those in the photo Whats anyone else done ?

I've done mainly fuchsias this year - they look nice but are not especially eyecatching

Apart from one basket with strawberries and one with tomatoes I only did two with flowers this year...one has fushias and blue lobelia and the other one has petunias and busy lizzies.
Not all that brilliant but they look nice.

Gosh that's really lovely OM they've really done themselves proud. I don't do baskets, have a fear of insects dropping onto my hair but I did a nice little window box with cuttings I took and seeds I've sown. It's just starting to come into it's own and will have blooms for another couple of months.

My baskets are just starting to get going, another couple of weeks and they should be better. The other six are about the same as these

That must take a lot of watering. They look amazing.I love it when public places put on a flower display it makes summer all that much better. LG and Mowhay your containers lok great.

Can I pick some brains please?
I am trying to think of things that could be planted in hanging baskets and window boxes, (south facing) which will have year round interest and be easy to maintain.
Any ideas?

Every time I come to this thread I can only think of the usual summer stuff - geraniums, petunias etc.
However you could underplant with bulbs perhaps - crocus, dwarf daffs etc and also use heathers and variagated ivy for a hanging basket with a difference. Even those tiny tiny coniferous might be useful.

Trailing fuschias do well in hanging baskets, and should be ok year round in a sheltered area.

Could you do alpines in a window box I know you'd have to over winter them but I reckon most stuff would need that unless you use just annuals for the summer. I always find baskets and boxes difficult because they do need maintaining.....how about you have 2 sets, a winter box/basket and summer. Maybe even spring, summer, autumn, winter ;D OMG ;D

Whats everyone doing this year. As usual I've not really given it that much thought yet so it would be good to get ideas.
Previous years I've done quite a few bits from cuttings and that worked really well, helped save a few pennies. Hope to get to the GC in the next week to see whats worth getting and I'll definately be looking for plants that I can do cuttings from. All I've got so far is a couple of geraniums from seed and my good old variegated Nepeta that seems to survive year after year.
Last year I bought some of those coco fibre liners from Wilkos for my baskets and a metal basket trough thing I have but found the birds stripped most of it for nestin material.

I have some of those coco fibre liners...never thought about the birds nicking it although when I brought the moss stuff a few years ago the birds pinched the lot!!

Bless the little birds! ;D
I'm going to use my cone baskets for one more summer. They are looking a bit sad and the liners are all broken up but I thought I could use bin bags and then when stuff started to trail no one would see the baskets much.

Ooooh Jasmine you've reminded me I've got two of the half cone ones in the shed, they sit in a metal cradle/hoop affair, bet I'll only get another year out of the baskets wonder if you can just buy new baskets This is them in 2009, you can see the metal bit that they hang in better on pic 2, the basket sits inside a hoop bit. Mmmm bless the birds ;D

They're pretty Chuckles - mine hang. I suppose the wicker bit is going to fall apart in the end. I bet you could find something similar to put in the brackets even if it's hanging ones like mine and you just take the metal hanging chain bit off.
